Group clips (nondestructive, like group regions in Pro Tools)

Post by flipside82 » Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:46 am

This might go against the whole philosophy behind clips in Live, but then again not.
Say I have a kick drum copied out over 8 bars.. I want to select that 8 bar region, press Cmd+G or whatever, and have that become ONE moveable clip. (While still retaining the single clips inside, so you can go back). Makes it much easier to work with the arrangement.. I know, I can consolidate, but I don't want that :) I want to be able to "go back" inside the clip groups.

The way this works in Pro Tools is really nice. You can select anything, a mix of audio and midi regions, and still press Alt+Cmd+G, and it creates ONE block, that you then can move or slice or whatever. You can also create a hierarchy of groups. Say group 4 Kicks into a bar, then duplicate up to 8 bars and group those 8 x 1 bar regions to 1 x 8 bar region. THEN group that with the snare track below. Then if you press Alt+Cmd+U you ungroup one level up, and can make changes if you want.

Would also be great for chopped up vocals or whatever, where you want to be able to go back and tweak things, while still having the ability to arrange a section of chopped vocals without having to carefully selecting them all or accidentally moving one etc.

If this is already suggested, then let me know, I read the big thread with the collected requests and didn't seem to find it there.

I hope I'm understanding you right. Have you tried using the drumrack? It might serve you a little better and more flexibly than grouping audio tracks.

+1 for this request. This is one of the top features that i miss in ableton and i think it would greatly enhance the way you can work with small audio snippets / chopped up audio.
Cubase has a similar feature were you select several audio snippets and put them into a container - like consolidate in Ableton, but in a non-destructive/editable way. You could then use this container as a clip in session view and you would be able edit/move around the audio snippets inside the container directly in session view.

Right now i think working with chopped up audio in Ableton is a bit of a pain - i'd love to be able to do that in session view instead of arrangement view and i'd love to be able to do so without having to use the slice to midi channel feature.

Yes, I am a regular campaigner for group clips. I would even go so far as to say "I'd like to drag a section of arrangement into session and have it become one row of folded groupclips"
I've been posting relentlessly on the subject since 2005. They are aware of the idea ;)

Btw I used to refer to them as Metaclips, which is accurate, but groupclips is probably more sensible

+1 for this functionality, I use the PT group region constantly and it is a simple blessing. The "consolidate" function will get you there, but is incredibly inefficient for this task ... down right wasteful. Consolidation is a great tool, but not for this. Ableton guys, if you are out there, please implement this ... I can't imagine this taking too many resources. In my view, these are the gaps in products that give news guys opportunities to steal users.

I use Ableton to edit DJ mixes with the crowd feed on two separate tracks, and I want to keep the crowd in sync. A grouping function for clips across multiple tracks would be a godsend. In the meanwhile, I need to switch DAW for each edit and go back to Ableton to finish it.
