How to make a live triggered Midi CC sync with tempo or looper?

Post by tomboudiboudi » Thu Mar 11, 2021 5:50 pm

Hi everyone :D

I try to use the Live's Looper device properly with my footcontroler (Line6 FBV3) and my guitar, but I struggle with tempo syncing when live triggering midi CC with footswitches. There is my effects chain:

guitar -> Neural Archetype Gojira -> 1st Beat Repeat -> 2nd Beat Repeat -> Looper -> Master

Looper is triggered by momentary footswitches.
I run those 2 Beat Repeat instances (one is set on 1/4 T, the other on 1/8) to generate stutter/repetition effects, with footswitches triggering "Repeat" buttons. Having it sets on "Mix" allows me to play notes/chords/melody over the stutter effect.

But when I trigger one of those Beat Repeat, the moment I click on the footswitch never fall totaly in time with Looper's tempo. After some loop bars, the stutter/repetition effect tend to gets increasingly offbeat from the loop, which it makes it barely unusable.

Does anyone knows if midi CC messages live triggered by the user (no automation here) can follow the song and/or Looper tempo? I know that I can get along this with automations, but actually I'm trying to play live

I think you can do that with dummy clip. You need a short audioclip (session view) in the channel where your FX is. The clip is only used to automate the FX (beat repeat), clip level is minimum. In clip view you find the envelopes for beat repeat. The clip can be quantized (global quantize) and remote controlled by midi cc. Footswitch CC -> DummyClip -> Envelope BeatRepeat. A forum search for dummy clip may help too.

If I get it right, the dummy clip is only here to draw an automation envelope for Beat Repeat to get automatically triggered in time?

Like I said at the end of my post, I'd like to play/improvise live and NOT rely on automation. At this time, I don't have my song structured in time, I only play live through Looper, so I can't make use of automation (I don't press transport button "Play" or launch clip as I still haven't decided how many bars each part of the song will long). Sorry if it wasn't clear enough :/

I'd like to trigger Beat Repeat when I want to without planning it, and make it perfectly in time.

I understand you this way:
you want to sync the looper tempo perfectly with the beat repeat actions. Then there must be a master tempo and LIVE must be running.

You can set looper as tempo master (LIVE follows the tempo you set in looper), then every quantized action (midiclip with automation) is in time/sync so no tempo drift over time.
As you said, the beat repeat has not the exact same tempo of the looper, because obviously both are not in sync.
The 1/4 and 1/8 triggers relate to the song tempo, that is not loopers tempo. Looper must be set to "set global tempo" or s.th. like that, then looper sets the song tempo and every quantized action is in sync to loopers (song) tempo.

The dummy clip can be triggered automatically, but in your case it should be manually remote controlled by your footpedal midi-CC, because you want to play it. You do not need to record the automation, the automation envelope is used for manually triggering by the clip.
Maybe you do not need dummy clips, because when the song tempo is in time with looper, then every quantized action, here 1/4 and 1/8 triggers, are perfectly in sync.

I hope that is what you need :)
