Tempo Follow and Link?
Tempo Follow and Link?
Hey Peoplez, i have a question. So, here's the setup: We have two Macbooks running Live 11, doing live stuff with drums and synthies and co. We're getting the tempo from the drums via tempo follow, which works great btw., but what we tried first is to send the tempo mic to both laptops which isn't the best way to do it, because it doesn't really run in sync. So the plan is to send the tempo to one ableton and let that one be the master clock for the other. Is this possible? Because if you link them you can't enable tempo follow. Maybe it works with midi somehow? Would be great if someone has an idea or some insight. Muchos Gracias
Re: Tempo Follow and Link?
Do you mean that both laptops intepret the drums tempo differently? Or just that you're still lacking a sync'ed play/stop between the laptops?

Re: Tempo Follow and Link?
If you send the same mic in the same position on drums, so practically the same signal, to both macbooks the tempo varies slightly, but enough to make it weird. I don't necessarily need a synced play/stop between both laptops, i just need to send the exact tempo from the live version, which follows the tempo of the drums to the other one without using link, because from my understanding that would disable tempo follow, right?
Re: Tempo Follow and Link?
Yeah, Tempo Follower and Link are exclusive.
That'd be very cool if you could write to [email protected] about this situation. It's not a total surprise that both laptops interprets the tempo a bit differently as it's a real-time process trying to be "human", but this shouldn't induce so much difference that multiple computers can't sync.
You could try something, not sure how much the latency would impact, though:
- the drums "tempo mic" goes into computer 1 via Tempo Follwer using e.g audio interface input 1
- add an audio track that listens to this same audio input 1, and sends its output "A" to computer 2
- in computer 2 select signal "A" as the Tempo Follower signal
OR
send computer 1 metronome to computer 2 tempo follower?
No idea if this would be reliable, or even better than what you already tried, but it's worth trying anyway.
You can also try sending computer 1 tempo via midi sync to computer 2.
In any case, it's worth writing to [email protected] as this shouldn't be an issue. The code might need some enhancements.

Re: Tempo Follow and Link?
I'm curious as to what the rationale is behind making Link and Follow exclusive... I was hoping it'd be simple enough to use a mic to set the tempo, and then just have my 2nd linked application read that BPM and follow along, but alas. Hopefully in future versions, or maybe someone will figure a way to hack a solution!
Re: Tempo Follow and Link?
I'm needing a similar solution,
Using follow but really need link to push abletons tempo to other link devices..
Real bummer! Maybe technically a limitation
