Problem when sending midi to synth and recording back audio, wav is shifted to the right

Post by DigitalSoul1973 » Mon Mar 22, 2021 9:05 pm

I am sequencing external synths in Ableton using mdi clips and recording the audio back in as audio clips, but i am finding that the audio, rather than recording slightly late is actually recording early, so, on say a 1 bar recording, I am losing the very first part of the recording which is then coming back in at the very end, like reverse latency, as if the midi notes are being received too early, which they are obviously not, but I cant explain what is happening. Is this a common problem and how can it be solved? I am sending midi over usb and recording via audio interface.

Cheers

Since you're recording from already recorded midi that's perfectly in time, I'm guessing Live is compensating the way it would a live recording, which is usually played slightly late due to latency.

The right way to do this is to set an External Instrument device (found under Instruments) on you midi track, set it to send midi to your external synth, and receive the audio from the corresponding input on your interface. Then set the recording audio track to receive the audio from that midi track, not directly from the audio interface.
I get my transients dead on the beat this way.

Thanks Chancery

I had been using external instruments, but hadnt been sending the audio from them to my audio channel as you described. When I do that now, the recorded audio clip waveform looks like its recorded it bang on with no latency, but the actual audio is playing a 1/4 bar off. I tested this by placing a single midi note on 1.3, the audio waveform shows it hitting at exactly 1.3, but the audio actually registers in master ands plays on 1.4. Where would that latency be coming from?

Not sure. I don't get that behaviour. Sound like it may be a heavy plug-in, like a Brickwall Limiter on the Master Track?

Hello, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I have similar issues issues with External Instrument. I just upgraded to Abe 11, I use External instrument to play my Yamaha MODX synth. I m using MIDI from Push2 to play the synth. On the Device Title Bar (bottom of page) I have MIDI to MODX, and Audio From 1/2.
But nothing comes into Ableton. I tried using an audio track to receive audio from the (ext inst) midi track, but no sound . The MODX sound is going into the mixer, and coming out my speakers, but nothing flowing into Abe 11. I have a Komplete Audio 6 interface, and the driver is set to ASIO, Audio device; Komplete Audio 6. It is a mystery to me, and clues?? Is something not connected right, or is my audio interface dead? Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "Device Title Bar (bottom of page)".
Also, you mention a mixer, which I assume is an external one. You'd have to describe how exactly you're connecting everything. It could be so many things.
