No sound

Something that has been a reoccurring issue for me is that there is no sound either of what I input or what has already been recorded. I check my preferences and everything seems normal, I turn the red record button on, I check to make sure my inputs are working, and I wonder if there is something I'm missing or not checking.
Two days ago I was having the same issue and I stepped away from the laptop/keyboard for about a half hour and when I came back the sound was working as it normally does. Today I'm having the same issue and leaving it alone hasn't worked.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and how they resolved them.
