MIDI CC output overloading my interface

I'm automating two CC messages to external instruments. When there's just a single envelope going it's fine. With two envelopes going, after about a bar the song slows down to like half speed. When I stop the sequencer, it's like the interface is backed up and it takes a moment for everything to actually stop.

I guess Ableton is sending too many MIDI events to the interface and I can't figure out why or how to fix it, besides trying to draw these automations by hand using the brush tool, which is far from optimal. Can anyone help?

I figured it out ... the issue happens when I use the Max4Live device CC Sender 16. Either the device is designed incorrectly or Max4Live outputs excessive CC messages.
