Tempo change via midi clip (with IAC driver) causing huge CPU spikes

Post by SelleDVH » Tue Dec 14, 2021 10:20 pm

Dear readers,

When I use this technique:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp-dfyZFbMY

A few things happen;

-The tempo sometimes changes a bit between the minimum and maximum but definitely doesnt follow the clip curve
-Ableton shows some huge spikes in its cpu meter (like 10000%)
-The audio sometimes beat repeats or stutters and at the same time the GUI freezes.

Things I have noticed and tried:

-MacOS activity monitor shows hardly any cpu or disk activity when running the clips, ram is not full.
-No available updates for my mac apart from MacOS monterey.
-No updates available for Live.
-Problem happens when using audio interface and when using internal macbook speakers.
-Sample rate makes no difference.

Specs;
-Newest version of Live 11.
-Macbook pro 16 inch 2019 i9 2,3ghz
-MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 (but the same issues with High Sierra 10.13.6 on older Macbook)

I really hope someone has an idea.

Thanks in advance,
Selle

If you're sure you aren't creating a midi feedback loop anywhere then this might be due to a bug and reporting to [email protected] is the way to go.
Meanwhile you could try using M4L (I think Isotonik Studios have a device that's doing this).

Thanks, im not sure how to check wether a midi feedback loop is occuring but I followed the steps in the video above closely so I dont think I am creating a loop. I tried Isotonik's M4L device and it gives a stutter every time it changes 1 bpm unit so that is unusable in my liveset, also tried another M4L device which can change the tempo in steps way smaller than 1 bpm (tempochange by Tune4media), which pretty much gives the same results as the IAC driver method. I think this might give a clue to where the problem could be. I will send this to Ableton support.
