SOLVED: Key mapping Chain Selector to multiple keys

Post by MattTheBat » Wed Feb 23, 2022 12:52 am

Does anyone know how to key map the chain selector (in an instrument rack) to multiple keys on a computer keyboard? (I know there's MIDI mapping options for this, but with my current situation, I specifically need key mapping). Let me show you an example of what I mean.

Here, I want to be able to use the 'J' key on my computer keyboard to select the 1st instrument in my instrument rack to play it. Additionally, I want to be able to use the 'K' key to select the 2nd instrument, the 'L' key for the 3rd instrument, and 'M' for the 4th.

However, when I tried mapping the chain selector, I was only able to map one key to it, not multiple keys. I don't know if this is because the chain selector can't be mapped to multiple computer keyboard keys, or I just don't know the ins-n-outs of key mapping well enough. Let me give an example of the mapping problem I face.

All in all, I need help figuring out how to control the value of the chain selector in an instrument rack using computer keyboard macros (key mapping).

I know I can duplicate an instrument rack and just use two separate racks to control the chain selector, but with my current situation, I'd much prefer to not do this. I want to keep all the instruments listed in the image in one instrument rack.

Maybe a potential solution is to somehow map a key that triggers an automation that changes the value of the chain selector. Not sure how to do that tho...

Let me know if you can figure this out,
Thank you,

Hi Matt, are you on Live 11? If so you can use macro variations to get a snapshot for each of your four set-ups, and then map the keys to each snapshot.

You can control the Chain Selector via Clip automation - so create a new Clip for each Instrument Chain (4x in your example) in the Rack's MIDI track (Session View), map each Clip to a different qwerty key (J, K, L, M). If you're recording this into Arrange view from Session view, you only need one track, but if you want to use Session Clips to play the instruments, you can create a second MIDI track and route its output to the Rack track so you can play it via new Clips.

Yes, I'm on live 11 and the macro variation ideas worked! Thank you!
