Complex midi routings and mappings

Post by Belibat » Wed Mar 02, 2022 11:41 am

Hey everyone!
I just faced a wall while trying to do the following, maybe some of you know a solution:
- i’m using a nanokey studio midi controller (25 keys keyboard) but any midi keyboard would work
- i’d like the same controller to output two different messages:
1) a midi note, always the same note 46 whatever key i’m pressing, and i did that using two Pitch devices, one to -128 the other to +46
2) midi cc values, so i mapped the 25 keys, from c1 to c3, to control a knob (entering midi map mode, selecting the knob, and pressing C1 and C3)
- i created a midi rack with two chains, 1st with the Pitch devices, 2nd with the device containing the knob i want to control
- what happens is that as soon as i map the keys to the knob, they will not send the midi note anymore

Is there a way to send both the note and the midi cc messages from the same keys?
Or to cheat Ableton duplicating the midi controller, so i can assign one to send the note and the other to send the cc?
Hope this is clear enough. :)
Thank you so much!

Ok so, i found a workaround using the Mac Iac Driver. Basically using the Nanokey to send the note and the Iac to send the cc messages. Wondering if there’s another solution tho..

Is the XY pad not an option? That thing is really fun and has a few modes, tweaks, and mappable settings. I think even a Z for on/off if I recall.

As for the keys, due to them only sending as one device on a single midi channel, you’re kind of stuck with your solution or maybe some kind of max options (if I recall, there’s a max device for mapping mod wheel, aftertouch, pitchbend etc input to devices with a max Map button, might also have Key or Note)

Expression Control device in Midi Effects has ‘Keytrack’ as a dropdown option. On the top right of the interface is a little symbol for changing exponential slope.

So I’d unmap the C1 to C3 mapping to the macro knob and instead put Expression Control at the beginning of the chain before your two Pitch midi effect devices. Everything will be on one tidy package.
