Re: Performance test looks wierd in my machine...
What do you mean?fossilfool wrote:Guys,
When I load this set, it sounds perfect, but I can't see the normal scene layout. Any tips? Screenshot below.
What is not normal in that screenshot?

Why not ?!...wavejumper wrote:"maybe Live for Mac is more slow than with an equivalent PC machine. Something Ableton could fix with an update for Mac users, maybe...

No scenes appear
Dr.,
What's not normal is that there are no scenes for me to choose from. In the Master column, there's a scene called "1" but when I click it, nothing happens. Across the columns you can see that there are no clips showing.
Same thing happens in the demo song. See below.

thats because the demo song you have loaded is a tour through Live ARRANGEMENT
the song shows the Arrange view.
and all sounds play back from Arrange, not from session.
in the case of the PERFORMANCE TEST .als, the empty clip slots are on audio tracks that have Impulse sounds individually routed to them, no clips are required in those tracks.
if you want more Scenes, select the first scene, then go to the INSERT menu, and click "Insert Scene".
Have you read the manual yet?

what is the PC equivalent to the G4 1,67ghz
There isn't an equivalent PC to that for sale today.... they're all much faster.
Maybe if you went back 5 years you'd find something comparable. My desktop computer is over 5 years old, and it runs this performance test about the same as the G4 laptops that are posting results.
Just got my new G5 2.3Ghz today so I had to run the performance test right away.
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter % 35% (Yeah Baby! -- at least for a Mac)
2) PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3Ghz Desktop
3) Operating System : 10.3.7 (and it's my old bloated OS, not a stripped down one)
4) CPU Make Model and Speed (see 2)
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram 1.5 G
6) Soundcard (Stock or add on?, usb/firewire/pci ?) I used stock internal. Waiting for my upgraded M-Audio Delta 66 pci card
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed 7200 SATA
Despite a ram upgrade that didn't work, config problems, and having to return a 2Ghz machine because it's incompatible with my audio card, I'm loving it.

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: peak 39% (sorry, I forgot to turn on the delay compensation in the first test)
2) Laptop/Desktop: fujitsu-siemens amilo pro v2000 laptop
3) Operating System: xp pro sp2
4) CPU Make Model and Speed: intel pentium m banias core, 1.5GHz
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram: 1280 MB pc2700/ddr333
6) Soundcard: internal with asio4all v 2.6
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed: 5400 rpm, 8MB cache
(if you guys feel the fan annoying sometimes when finetuning your mixes, you can undervolt the processor with rmclock (laptoplogic.com, advanced battery guide), my maxtemp decreased 20 C hehe)

updated performance testing with 5.02 and hyperthread off
I just turned hyperthreading off after owning my lappie for over a year, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Live now can go up to 80-90% CPU, no issues. No stutters, no cpu spikes, nada. Can't believe I had put up with that shit for a year...
My guess is that even though Live wasn't touching the second virtual CPU, when the cpu load got high, the rest of the system started using the virtual CPU, and then things got bad. And even though I had the system tweaked to Tarekith's and Black Viper's settings, it was still bad.
In any case, here are my test results with Live 5.02 and this performance test...I'm very pleased
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: Bounces between 31-34%, hovering around 32%
2) Laptop - Sager 5960
3) Operating System - XP, SP2, fully tweaked
4) CPU: Intel P4, Hyperthreading turned off, 3.2 ghz, Northwood.
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram - 1ghz, DDR400
6) Soundcard: RME Multiface and Cardbus
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed: Two internal Toshiba 7200 RPM IDE hard drives

Re: updated performance testing with 5.02 and hyperthread off
I recently disabled Hyperthreading in the BIOS and there is a definite performance gain in both Live 5 and Cubase SX 3. I mainly did it because Cubase doesn't like Hyperthreading in the first place, but after realizing Live doesn't use Hyperthreading either it's a WIN WIN situation. My Delta 1010 with an ASIO buffer of 64 can hit 90% CPU and not a single hiccup!
Accidents are the portal to discovery!
interesting to me...maybe not to anyone else.
previous test:
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: low 29% peak 35% avg 32%
2) Laptop/Desktop: Custom Built Desktop Shuttle SK83G
3) Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP2
4) CPU Make Model and Speed: Athlon 64 3000+ 2Ghz
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram : 512megs DDR
6) Soundcard: SB Live w/ ASIO4all drivers
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed: 7200rpm
no glitches.
current test after adding 512 megs of RAM (total 1gb) and a new videocard (ati radeon 7000 w/ 64 megs ddr):
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: peak 32%
ok, so it ain't much, but it made me happy...
