Buying a new Mac : Maxed out Mini or Mac Studio ?

Post by chapelier fou » Mon Mar 14, 2022 8:51 am

Time to buy a new computer.
I'd use it for music production only, mainly using Ableton Live 11 and Max/MSP.
I'm working with video from time to time, usually within Live.
I'm hesitating between a maxed out Mac Mini with M1 chip and the new Mac Studio.
Any advice ?

Mac Studio easily.
May I ask why ? Because of the M1 Max chip ?

Definitely, and for less thermal management due to the increased cooling.

And more headroom/CPU/grunt for now, and longer into the future. Better investment.

Thanks guys.
Pulled the trigger for a Mac Studio with 32Go RAM and a 4To drive. One month to wait, though.

I'm still wondering if my mini will ever make a noise one day...

I have a 2020 Intel and didn't believe mine had a fan in it until the day I decided to rip one of my DVD's with it. I thought it was the external DVD drive at first but nope there's a fan in there, but even the little mini really needs to be pushed before it needs to come on. Ive heard it come on when Cubase is exporting a mix down, but only heard it in Ableton when I decided to get crazy and use Pigments and Plasmonic in the same project hah.
