Mapping tracks to Novation Launchpad Mini

Post by 300bpm » Sat Apr 23, 2022 2:11 pm

Here's the deal. When I program drums, I load each separate percussion sample into instances of Simpler on separate midi tracks. I want to use specific pads on a Novation Launchpad Mini to trigger those samples in those specific midi tracks.

How do I map a specific pad to a specific midi track in Ableton, basically? I've looked at a lot ot tutorials, but I can't seem to get it. I don't even know what mode to use Launchpad in for this.

Thanks.

If they’re on separate channels, that is the part which makes it most tricky. If you do not need individual clips for each part, you could always use a drum rack instead, which is the equivalent of having each sample on a separate channel.

Otherwise, if you do need them to be on separate channels, there are two approaches you can try. In both approaches you’d need to arm All of the channels simultaneously (or alternatively, set monitor to On).

One approach is to have each Channel receive midi from a different midi channel. And then you set the LP in User Mode to send the Same note on each pad, but each note has to be set to be on a different midi channel. If you plan to use more than 16 triggered sounds, this probably isn’t ideal.

The other approach is to have an empty drum rack on Each Channel. And for each of those, use a different slot for your samples. Then you simply have the LP set to send notes chromatically, or, each pad is set to go up one note, whatever notes are associated with the pad you’ve chosen in the drum rack.
