Rewire Slave questions

Post by Guest » Thu Jul 03, 2003 2:18 pm

I attempted the other day to use Live 'like an instrument' as a rewire slave. Unforntunately, I just couldnt seem to get it working. I've had experience with all these hosts and rewire (Live as the master, Reason as the slave, Reason rewired into all the above hosts, etc...)

My setup: WinXP, Live 2.0.3, Cubase SX 1.06, Sonar 2.2, Tracktion 1.3.1.206

In each of these hosts, I started the host app first (Cubase, Sonar, Tracktion). In cubase, I pulled down the 'Ableton Live' rewire panel and selected outputs as required. I then started Live and it came up in slave mode.

Now, I had a feeling that I'd have somewhat of a problem as compared to Reason given the fact that Live doesnt seem to accept midi input from host application like Reason does. In Live, I wanted to queue up a bunch of things and trigger them via my midi controller and capture that (much like you would for Reason, or any instrument for that matter.) Because the recorded midi never gets passed to Live as the rewired slave, none of the audio is recorded.

So how exactly is the rewired slave supposed to work? I must be missing something. Any help would really be apprecaited ;)

get midi ox and midi yoke (search these forums to find) which will allow you to route your midi to many places at once, and should allow you to use you midi to control live as the slave.

Midi from my controller should be just fine... the issue is that recorded midi doesnt seem to make it to the app irrespective of routing. I think the problem is that Live doesnt listen to midi data from the master app, and I have no means (that I can see anyway) of choosing that. I can't really see the point of a rewire slave acting as such so I must be missing something.

Ideally, Live should be a rewire2 app, which would really make it like an instrument... and that would be so incredibly cool. :)

Hi folks,

like you already said Live does not recieve MIDI from the reWire Master.
But it has nothing to do with ReWire 1 or 2. It's just not (yet) supported.

I already posted something on that issue in the announcement thread of Live 2.1b1:

What would be the proper way to get sound to render from my host app using a rewired Live slave?
