6 pin firewire is powered
4 pin firewire / i-link is not powered

any pcmcia cards that do offer a 6 pin firewire slot needs to be powered via a wallwart power supply. i don't know of any laptop that offers a fully powered 6pin firewire port

Acer might be the only one. 17`` monster with P4 3.2G,.
Plus- 6 pin FW, or even 2, regular desktop 3.5 HD and RAM ( means cheap to upgrade).
Minus- hot, noisy and heavy - 15 pounds.

Just google "Acer TravelMate 3000." Looks like it can be had for around $1,300 (US).

I still think that with shared graphics this machine rocks. If I had that kind of money today, I'd soooo buy it.

shared graphics is over hyped anyway, you'd probably be surprised at what I can get out of my humble athlon 2200 with 64MB SHARED graphics, the 1GB ram no doubt helps, but still

Keep in mind that just because a laptop might have 6 pin firewire, that doesn't neccesarily mean that it can power your external devices. IF your soundcard for instance wants more power than the firebus can reliably provide, you might still get a lot of weird issues.
