how to avoid too much clip duplicates in a scene?

Post by alternatereality » Fri Jul 08, 2022 6:29 pm

In Ableton Live I think it is quite common to create sequence of clips row-by-row.

When the same clip continues to play also in the next scene, there are two similar possibilities:
- duplicate the clip also in next scene
- remove stop button from next scene

I want to avoid the first option as I end up with copies and copies of the same clip, then I want to change a note, I have to delete and copy clips again (?).

The second option, although is very nice -as it does not generate that copy-paste hell-, has a major disadvantage: in the ext launchpad controller the stop buttons render exactly in the same way as empty cells.

Only by looking at the controller is hard to tell the structure of the arrangement, or what is going to happen in the next scene.

E.g with this scene:

I see:

Is it only me? Is it only this controller?

Am I missing some obvious step or setting in Live or in the controller?

What would you expect? Something like a pad color used specifically for "cells with removed stop buttons"?

You could use "dummy" clips with looping turned off that would act as "stop buttons", this way you'll know that empty cells are "cells with removed stop buttons" while your x color dummy clips are "stop buttons".
I can't think of any other solution here. Knowing your set is probably the best way to go about it.
The Launchpad doesn't have dedicated "stop clip" row of buttons? On top or below the grid?

Ideally I'd like to see a special color in cells without stop button. For this probably I'd need to modify the MIDI remote script of Launchpad Pro.

Putting a dummy clip to act as explicit stop button is a workaround, better than nothing...

or also only making copies of clips as a final step to replace empty cells without stop buttons.

It would be nice if Ableton had "clip references" so it is possible to create linked copies of clips in the session view.
