I've only recently started actively toggling automation, because i didn't realize some of the more classic editing styles had been disable when automation is enabled. So now I'm kinda liking being able to quickly toggle in order to do more destructive editing/arranging.
So... why did it stop working? I've already closed any plugin GUI's. I've checked multiple projects. When I hover over the automation button Ableton confirms that "A" is supposed to turn it on/off. But it just stopped working.

do you have the virtual MIDI thing turned on in the upper right? (little keyboard icon.) I believe I had that same thing happen a week or two ago and that was the problem.

"A" key has been mapped to a parameter. Unmap it.

Yep. It was the computer keyboard controller thing. I think when I was using the Captain plugins it got enabled automatically.
Thanks!
