PLEASE IMPROVE VIDEO SUPPORT 😊

Post by agamben » Fri Nov 04, 2022 2:18 pm

Hello every one and sorry for my bad english,

I’ve been using Live since version 4 - a while ago, so I know the program quite well and I’ve always been ennoyed by the way it (doesn’t) handle video clips.

Today I work on Windows 11, with an i9 12900H Laptop (considered as one of the most powerful CPU available) and I can’t even make music in Live with a 15min 1080p mp4 video clip on the timeline.

I use an eGPU at home with an Nvidia card (gtx 1660) not the top of the range but something that should be largely sufficient to work with 1080p video (I do all my editing with it on Vegas Pro).

I tried encoding in every possible format in Handbrake as suggested, adding keyframes, etc…
But when I launch the video window in Live , the GPU usage goes up to 100%, and if I try moving the window to my second monitor Live crashes immediately. And this is with only ONE track in the project (the video track).

With exactly the same setup, the GPU usage is less than 8% in Reaper. No need to say I can work without problem and add a lot of audio tracks in this program. Though I miss the fun and inspiring part of doing music with Live.

I’m a little tired now that after all these years nothing ‘serious’ has been made about the way Live handles the video.
I don’t ask for fancy editing or export capabilities, just BASIC video PLAYING inside the DAW without FREEZING and CRASHING.
The response from Ableton is to download an open source codec, which development has ended in 2013...
Are you serious ?

I did try to install almost every codec pack available : Haali, FFd Show, CCCP, K-lite... and unfortunately none of them solved the problem.

How can a 50$ DAW coded by one guy (Reaper) do better in this area than a 500$ DAW made by a company employing hundreds of people ?

Ableton do you intend to add REAL, STABLE, PROFESSIONAL video PLAYBACK support in Live ?
Many thanks in advance,
Romain
