Visual Metronome

Post by themechanic » Mon Oct 11, 2010 1:25 am

Hi, just a minor wish but I would like to have a more visual metronome, like a swing arm or a back and forth light or something, and also an option to make it bigger. Right now I find it a bit difficult to anticipate beats musically. Thanks ~ !

If you have a midi controler with leds, just do a metro track in live and send midi out to make the leds blink.
For instance, i have a very good visual metronome on my launchpad, with several colors.

Hi all, thanks for the replies, I have a launchpad - is there a way to make it light up back and forth in succession in time with the metronome? (Not just 2 lights, but across the eight - like a cylon eye?) This midi-ness is out of my league... TIA, Ed

I like Moldover's metronome. Real simple dirty great big four-point clock face type thing. :D I'd love something like that!

In addition to a more visual metronome, I would like to have the option of changing the sound to more of a click of a traditional metronome or something from the drum rack. I have a friend who is more distractd than helped by the sound of the metronome.

You can replace the default metronome sounds. You have to do it manually for each new Live version, though.

The metronome wavs can be found at:
(Mac) live app > right click > show package contents > contents > app-resources > misc > metronome > samples

and as Tone helpfully pointed out on PC:
C:\Program Files\Ableton\Live 8.1\Resources\Misc\Metronome\Samples

I replace mine with a neutral Logic klopfgeist click.
Also, I use the same sound for both the up- and down-beats.

Sounds kind of like the proximity tracker in Aliens... grab 'em here if you like:

Check this as a starting point (download LP's programmer reference):

A MIDI track, output set to the Launchpad - sending the correct MIDI notes for each pad - ( and also velocity, because that changes the color 8) )

Had a setup running with MODUL8 or some other video app.. Ableton triggers 4 midi notes that are mapped to 4 jpeg images, could use 1.2.3.4 or just 4 different looking colored backgrounds or whatever..

launch your scene and your visual metronome gets triggered, FULL SCREEN! or maybe just on the output window of MODUL8

Another option is to use your ableton with the audiocubes. By sending midi cc messages from within ableton to midibridge, you can change the colours of the audiocubes. You can also mix colours, change the intensity of the lights of the cubes, etc Here you can read more on how to set up a visual metronome in ableton using audiocubes

Hi everyone,
I have coded a visual metronome in M4L : https://www.orangeandmilk.com/product/easy-metronome/
You can even get a second window for a bigger display :)
