How to automate movement on a knob based on a new note starting

Post by max-williams » Sun Jan 08, 2023 8:43 pm

I've been playing with synths in Instruments and have a setup where it sounds really nice if the arp (arpeggiator) rate is set very fast when a note starts and then it slows down over the period of a couple of seconds. Is it possible to automate this, ie for the arp rate to jump to 10 when a new note triggers and then move to, say, 80, over the space of two seconds, and to have all of those values configurable? There are so many automation options that I don't understand, I feel like it's possible but can't figure it out. Thanks!

I believe there is a midi device that lets you do envelopes. It’s a max for live device though, so only available if you have that (which is included in Suite)

I think the behavior might also depend on a few factors, especially if you’re hitting multiple notes at a time. Not sure whether or not you can change the retrigger behavior to legato or something

Thanks - i do have Max for Live but i've never used it. It's a good point about the polyphony, i guess it would be fine if the notes were programmed to start at the same time. I think i need to do some tutorials.

You don’t have to rebuild the entire device. There is a midi device that comes with Live. If there isn’t, there are probably a few at the max for live site.

Learning to program max in order do this one task might be a heavy distraction.
