TLDR: How do you get Live 10 file relocate to look for and automatically candidate multiple files that have had MORE TEXT added to the name?
Example:
Original file name: "Clap1.wav", "Perc7.wav"
New name: "Clap1-some_sample_pack_name.wav", "Perc7-some_sample_pack_name.wav"
I've always been rather impressed with Ableton's file management system since Live 9, it's far more than the general user could have asked for and really can help save up space and avoid duplicate files if you know how to use it. That said I've come across an annoyance that I'm wondering if anyone has an answer to.
After years of producing I've collected a lot of kits, Ableton instruments (devices), and sample packs; and one of my biggest pet peeves is when designers don't include their company name and/or the pack name in the sample file names. This leads to dozens of samples with very similar or duplicate names spread all over my machine and drives. It also makes it REALLY hard to relocate correct sample files down the line, especially when Live is trying to relocate a large amount of files for an Instrument with very simple, common names.
So to solve this problem I've started going through the process of using a bulk file renaming software to append the sample designers name or the pack name to sample files, and with ableton kits or instruments, appending that kit or instrument name to all the sample files in the kit. This way I'll never have to worry about selecting the wrong samples for the wrong kit!
However, I quickly realized that Ableton's file relocate system won't find or even consider a candidate those files with appended names when the automated processes are used. The only way to relocate is to do every single file by hand. Even the "resolve all missing files based on Location of the file you've replaced (selected)" function can't work here. So a great idea with a super logical intentions to ensure a stable file system is being held up by this lack of ability in Ableton. If only Ableton could be instructed to look for a name pattern or forced to associate with a folder you've designated.
Does anyone know of any way around this? Even possibly with scripting??
As stated above I am on Live 10.
Thanks a million.
