Just Be Honest
I don't understand what is going on here, you guys sound like our retarded
president when he talks about weapons of mass destruction, listen you hard, hard, hard, very hard headed people.
The creator, inventor, manufacturer of live says that he uses a powerbook
but that Live is much better on a pc and he wishes his powerbook ran like that.
so what is the problem ? can't you tell somebody who comes to this site and ask what kind of laptop to get the truth? this is getting rediculous, and the level of denial here is staggering!!!, there are a zillion live users on the
mac that wish their laptops did much better on this site and others, don't you feel any remorse or guilt for trying to tell somebody that they get the same power on the macs as on the pc, don't you have a concious. we're not suppose to judge peoples needs just tell them what gives them the most for their money. we don't know if they only need 3 tracks or if they need 30 but their is a difference between the two and if you don't let them know then what you call helping someone out with advice is bull shit.
If Logic is your main program then please get yourself an powerbook
if live is your main program then it makes sense on all levels
cost
power
track count
efx count
to get yourself a pc laptop, some of them like the sonys will even help you get layed like the powerbook does.
you know rewire puts more strain on the cpu than just using one program by itself, so please stop lying to these people who are looking for your help by telling them that they can do more on a mac with reason/rewire/live than on a pc cause thats a bold face lie!!!

almost true. integrated graphics chips, ones that share the system memory, will drag down performance. this can definitely hinder audio performance. but if you stay away from those, then everything is gravy.stew wrote:ebon -
h) For music usage, the graphics card doesn't mean anything. Don't let someone sell you a more expensive notebook just because it has a better graphics card.

no one who owns a mac and pc laptop (or anyone who has ever used both) should ever deny that the mac laptops internal sound is not only better sounding, but it also has much lower latency (4ms in OSX while PC's are usually around the 40-70ms range)... So consider that in your needs.
also...
I am all for what ever OS and price point your comfortable with -so ultimiatly its your choose... But when it came time for me to chose a laptop- at first I was drawn in by the cheapness and higher Clock rate of a PC laptop (dell inspiring) ... but days later I sent my new laptop back to dell for various reason (It was clunky, the battery did not last long at all compared to the powerbooks battery life, the internal souc card issue...). So i saved a bit more and got myself a tibook and have been in love ever since. (then again i have been a mac man for many years so that helped too)
Hopefully this comment is not looked upon as a mac vs pc thing, cous i hate that type of thread! - its just more things to think about on the hardware front.

apple really do make the best designed laptops in the world. it's not really their fault that the g4 has been lagging so much in performancce (they should have divorced motorola a LONG time ago), and it looks like the g5s will bring a bit more parity to their line, along with that inevitable luxury price tag. but you get what you pay for, i always like to believe. the new desktops look great, and apple should be applauded for once again innovating in design.datagroove wrote:no one who owns a mac and pc laptop (or anyone who has ever used both) should ever deny that the mac laptops internal sound is not only better sounding, but it also has much lower latency (4ms in OSX while PC's are usually around the 40-70ms range)... it's almost laughable at some of the solutions PC vendors have come out to try and match the 17" powerbook. not only are they much heavier, but bulkier, and less battery life to boot. PCs have the price thing going for them though. but i definitely concur that most musicians would rather not spend time troubleshooting their systems. macs are good for simplicity's sake and i only see core audio getting better and better.
i'd stay away from the new laptop line from dell. i've seen numerous complaints about issues with the internal soundcard and flimsy keyboard. my thinkpad is slightly on the heavy side at close to 7 pounds, but it has the best keyboard i've ever used on a lappie, along with 5 hour battery life and great lcd screen to boot. and it's quiet and won't burn my lap. hehe.

IBM's got a new superlight laptop. I have no idea about whether the new Intel processor in it is good for music or not, but it does seem like it competes with the Macs.

True, internal soundcards on mac laptops is generally better sounding/lower latency, but I've heard that the sony viao cards as good or better. And with MME or ASIO 2.0 drivers, internal pc laptop latency can go much lower than 40-70 ms, more like under 10 ms.datagroove wrote:no one who owns a mac and pc laptop (or anyone who has ever used both) should ever deny that the mac laptops internal sound is not only better sounding, but it also has much lower latency (4ms in OSX while PC's are usually around the 40-70ms range).

It's not as bad as it used to be: My Dell can go at around 10ms, but still my iBook can do 2ms. Other than that, my experience seems to be almost identical to yours: The Dell is much more flimsy, less battery life and the overall quality seems to be worse than Apple's. It may sound like a cliche, but when comparing most Windows notebooks to Power/iBooks, you're either getting lots of big numbers for a low price or quality for a higher price. Of course this is a gross generalization (Thinkpads are not cheap but have big numbers and good quality), but IMO there is no yes or no answer to the question which is better. They're different.datagroove wrote:no one who owns a mac and pc laptop (or anyone who has ever used both) should ever deny that the mac laptops internal sound is not only better sounding, but it also has much lower latency (4ms in OSX while PC's are usually around the 40-70ms range)... After all, it is a matter of taste. Since no one ever heard a difference between a Mac and a Windows notebook playing a sample, it doesn't matter anyway...

the new computers are all really fast now, and Live is a pretty lightweight and robust app. my $800 celeron laptop runs it just fine, and i play out all the time.
if you just want to make music and are looking for the best way to do it, my humble advice is to not get into the the trap of hotrodding and upgrading. any old thing will work, until i bought this lappy i was running it on a pentium 2 desktop
