windows XP

I am using windows 98 second edition right now but interested on installing the windows XP on my computer. Is it anybody using this opertating system with LIVE and how does it go?
Other programas that I use are soundforge, logic, orion.

i run live under xp pro .never had a aproblem

mr fly, i've been using XP to test Live and it's been working without a hitch. it's recommended that you have a fair bit of RAM for XP alone, but Live shouldn't cause any problems.

i too was running 98se before, and xp is just considerably more stable. but stock up on ram! i have 512mb in my p3-650 and it runs great.

My partner and I are running XP home edition on our music computer and it seems to be fine... We have taken the precaution of keeping it off the internet, thus eliminating the need for most of the Microsoft service packs and system bloat...

Went from 95' to Xp

... (big jump)
What a difference a day makes or this cas an OS ....
It's taken them 8 years to get to this point and I concur that by in large this time Micro$oft got the OS right

.
Far superior OS to 98' and 2000 IMHO .
Very stable this end anyway .

I'm seriously considering adding an Ibook 1Ghz for playing live, while retaining my Athlon 1Ghz for the studio ....

Raw power isn't that important to me - I always try to make best use of the limitations that are imposed on me - ... but today I think for a similar setup this should be a fair deal ...

one difference I know, a part obviously the price, is that home edition doesn't support dual processor motheboards.
Think about that before to buy, now I want to upgrade my PIV 2.5 to a dual 3.06 Ghz processor I have to buy WinXP Professional.
Not that it costs a fortune, but it's always money...

I heard a woman talking on the radio about concert's she's doing with toy pianos - doing original stuff and symphonies written for them by the likes of John Cage and others, and she came out with a little quote that really inspired me from Marcel Duchamp: "poor tools require better skills"

Sometimes little quotes like that can be real motivators.

Just made me think of it.

It's so true though - I've been seemingly lost in a rip tide of exploring new technology for the past year - which is great and i have enjoyed every bit of it, but in the process I've been getting so little music done - like I've been more interested in the tools and not what they make.......

first I have been building my new studio
then buying a new desk (mackie 24/8) new PC able to handle new softs then new PA and so on ...

the result : less finished songs

it is a shame

Going from 98 to XP will be a shock in a few ways, just so you are forewarned.

The interface is a bit annoying when you first use it. When I first switched from 98 to XP I ended up going through everything and changing it to look like 98, I'm not quite so picky now and since I know where things are moved to it isn't so bad.

You'll want to go through and remove a boatload of services. Some people here have suggested doing all the changes on www.blackviper.org, personally I think it is overkill. I like my system to still function properly for use other than music.

It is also important to feed the system as much memory as possible. XP is much better at dealing with memory and virtual memory than 98, plus it also likes to use both much more than 98. So while you could easily run 98 with 128MB - 256MB of memory, you'll really want 512MB for XP as a minimum. I've been considering upgrading my current system to 1GB because I know that my computer would love me for it
