Plug-in folders

Post by Flange » Fri May 12, 2023 9:19 pm

I’ve recently had to replace my hard drive and I am going through the arduous task of reinstalling everything. Can someone please clarify for me the plug in folders situation. When I install plugins from various third parties they install them in all different places and it’s a big confusing mess. In Ableton I get to choose only two locations correct? One folder for vst2 and one for vst3. Or can I choose more than 2? If I can only choose 2 I guess it means I have to move where they are all installed but I’ve noticed previously when I do this things break. Also how do I even figure out which ones are 2 and which 3. Currently I’m installing some air music instruments and it’s installing the content in my downloads folder!

I see the option for "custom" folders for both types of VST's.

Now, I just use VST 3 currently, but I've also "custom" added a path to "programs files/common/VST2" and it's worked. (that is for Celestion's "speakermix pro" which I'm not using right now, but I've done it)

So though I'm not an expert, I think other paths are possible.
Live 11.x Suite, Push 2, AMD Ryzen 7900x @ 4.7 GHZ, Windows 11, 32 GB ram, Volt 2, Nektar T4 and Atom SQ.
Also a new lappy: i7 1269, 32 gigs of ram.
