Why is there no built in autosave?`

Post by yagurlreese » Wed Jun 21, 2023 6:34 pm

No, im not talking about the undo history recovery. Im talking about just literally an autosave. Like calling the save function every x minutes.
Why is this not a thing in 2023 after 10+ years of ableton. Also, it's a shame i even need to ask this because Ableton *was* the one program after many many years that rarely ever crashed. But now its every week, every other session sometimes.
Why do i have to pay someone for a freaking max for live device to do autosave? I just dont get it, its frustrating.
Am i missing a setting somewhere? Please tell me its just a hidden setting somewhere :(

Because not everyone wants their project saved at set intervals, some people prefer to save as they reach certain goals in the project. Historically in Live you could no longer undo after you saved as well, and it was only recently that was changed.

I didn't know we could undo after a save, thanks! I 'grew up' with auto save on my prior DAW where you set what ever interval of save timing you preferred, which was wonderful and saved me a few times. I grew accustomed to it and now still really miss it. The times where everything is flowing and a lot gets added quickly, are the times when being organized saving is the last thing on my mind. Not enough of an issue to make me go back to the other DAW but it would be great to have an option to add.

live will recover your work in case of a crash. There really is a hidden autosave feature; it's just it's better if you chose when you want to manually save (and if you don't you'll get a prompt before closing). There's really no need for this feature. Personally I'd deactivate it first thing; sometimes you make modifications you don't want to keep and want to go back to a previous save; or when working on a live set you want to save your set in exactly the right condition and an autosave can really screw you. If I want to try things I'll create a copy of a set anyway.

Auto save and auto-load last set might actually get me to use Live more. This is something that really keeps me going in music apps. I’m not a professional, but I like to tinker around and do little sketches. If I keep branching off things, I like how I have these fun instruments I made already in the set and just use them in various ways.

I’m pretty sure though that this is not how people would want to use it. Just my two cents 8)

Auto Save has destroyed some work in other Apps. Therefore I allways switch it off.

Command / Control S has become my second nature if I want to save something substantial.
