Video Import on Live 11 Intro / Windows 10

Post by tilllt » Wed Jun 21, 2023 7:56 am

I am not able to import video fles into Ableton Live Intro on Windows 10, although the whatsnew / feature list for Live 11 explicitly states that Live Intro has that capability.

https://www.ableton.com/de/live/compare-editions/

The error message is "d:\some\location\video.mp4 could not be read. Maybe the file is broken or unlicensed".
Its the same, no matter if mp4 or ProRes *.mov. And my Live version is genuine and neither Prores nor Mp4 needs a license. Also the files are not broken, i can open them fine in VLC and Adobe Premiere.

Please dont tell me that Live needs a quicktime installation on Windows 11 to support that feature, since Quicktime on Windows is unsupportet since 2014 and poses a severe security risk on windows?

You have to be kidding me. My suspection was wrong, you dont need Quicktime instead you need to have the "Haali Media Splitter" (Matroska Splitter) installed to play video on Windows, even to play mp4 or other previously installed video codecs that LITERALLY ANY OTHER SOFTWARE on your system can play. Matroska Splitter is a piece of Software which had its last updates in 2013.

The Knowledge base article about this is a joke:
https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/artic ... ecswindows
Recommended codec for Windows (Live 64-bit)
The 64-bit version of Live can use any DirectShow compatible demuxers and decoders that are available on the computer, but on a fresh Windows system, only a limited number of video codecs are installed by default. That's why you might need to install additional codecs. Live has been tested with this codec:

Haali Media Splitter (also known as MatroskaSplitter), direct download here (right-click and select 'Open in new tab')
Important: Haali Media Splitter is the only third-party codec that currently functions with Live on Windows. To avoid video issues in Live, uninstall any other previously installed codecs, and leave only the Haali Media Splitter installed. To see your currently installed codecs:
Ah right, i am a professional video editor but i need to uninstall all third party codecs to enable Ableton Live to run on my system, and instead install an unsupported piece of software from 2013, which might interfere with the other tools i need for work... right.

Sorry guys, have the programmers responsible for implementing video playback in hibernation for the last 10 years? Can you maybe catch up 10 years and read video files without installing outdated open source codecs?
Thank YOU!

Hi, as you say Live Intro should indeed play and export video files (like even free DAW do).
Figure that a 750$ 'professional' DAW like Ableton Suite can't even properly PLAY simple Full HD mp4 video files on Windows without stuttering or crashing (even after installing their Matroska thing).

It's been going on for years, and it is a shame but unfortunately nobody at Ableton seems to care.

For now, I suggest you use another DAW to work with video (Reaper for ex. which is cheap, very efficient, and handles any video format).
