Push 2 defaults to send on MIDI ch. 9-16??
Push 2 defaults to send on MIDI ch. 9-16??
OK this is really weird to me, and I never noticed it until now because I always just used Push on tracks set to "All Channels". But now I want to integrate some external hardware, so I need to isolate things on specific MIDI channels.
What I noticed is that when I select the drop down in Ableton to select the MIDI channel I want to put the track on, if I play Push while the menu is open, I can see little indicators light up next to the channel Push is transmitting on. But that's where things started to get really bizarre. Each row of 8 pads transmits on channels 9 thru 16, one pad per channel. So if I hit the top left pad for example, it transmits on channel 9. Move one to the right, 10, and so forth. Then it wraps around to 9 again on the next row of pads.
What the heck is up with this? Is this a feature of some kind? Is there a reason anyone would ever want this? Is there a way to make Push transmit on one single specific channel?
Thanks!

I don't see the problem here as all you need to do is using the Push on one track and send this to one MIDI channel of your choosing. What kind of set up do have that this "feature" is even a problem? I use lots of external gear and I never encountered this problem, even though I recognize it.vanKloot wrote: Is this a feature of some kind? Is there a reason anyone would ever want this? Make some music!
Re: Push 2 defaults to send on MIDI ch. 9-16??
Sounds like my issue wasn't clear. It is in two parts.
1. I want to play a particular channel in isolation from both my external MIDI keyboard, AND Push, simultaneously. To do this I need both devices to transmit on one specific channel, and the track to receive on that same channel. The receive part is easy, and setting my keyboard to transmit on the specific channel, is easy. getting Push to transmit on the specific channel, seems impossible. To be specific, I want to transmit from Push, to channel 3. There seems to be no way to do this.
2. When I play Push, all Ableton channels show that they are receiving data on a different channel for each column of pads on Push. This is the really crazy part. Column 1 receives on channel 9, column 2 on channel 10, column 3 on channel 11, etc. I can't make any sense of why this is so, and why anyone would want it this way. Is it a bug? Some crazy configuration problem on my end? Something else?

Push has some really crazy quirks as a result of its fundamental design.
Basically, you're not expected to be able to filter out Push. Maybe with the exception of a track receiving midi from one specific controller only.
Push also really messed with my arming, switching to various tracks, etc flow.

That you don't see the problem seems to be a problem. I don't want to choose "All Channels" on my target track.Stromkraft wrote:I don't see the problem here as all you need to do is using the Push on one track and send this to one MIDI channel of your choosing. Exactly. I'm having this same issue, and found that response completely odd. If I set the Push 2 (using Midi From, and then dropdown menu to, say, Channel 10) I want the Push 2 to send midi ON THAT CHANNEL consistently - not hop around a range from 9-16 based on what row of pads I'm using. Every other midi controller I have (and I have probably a dozen) -- you set the channel, and it sends midi on THAT channel. I just need the Push2 to do that.dreadrocksean wrote: ↑Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:23 pmThat you don't see the problem seems to be a problem.
