Metronome silent on 1st beat when recording

Post by Mark Alias » Wed Aug 16, 2023 9:31 pm

I have a 1 bar count-in, metronome enabled for recording, 4/4 time, and get the 4 count-in clicks, but then 1 silent beat before the next 3 clicks. After that, the metronome clicks on every subsequent beat. Not a huge deal but it's a little distracting.

Is that by design? Can the behavior be modified? Thanks.

This isn't expected.
Which Live version are you using, on which OS?
Are you outputting the click to the main outs or to a different cue output?

11.3.4, Windows 11. Default new set (Count-in:1 Bar, Sound:Classic, Rhythm:Auto, Enable Only While Recording). Cue Out and Master Out are the same, Outputs 1/2.

As I fooled around with changing some of the options (different sound, Rhythm:1 Bar), I would (seemingly randomly) lose the entire count-in and session record immediately started with the skipped first beat. After exiting and restarting Ableton, default set, I get back to the same behavior: 4 count-in clicks, 1 silent + 3 clicks, then steady 4 clicks per measure. Happens with and without APC40 connected.

Edit: I just realized it only does this if I press the round button in the session view track/scene matrix (or press the corresponding APC40 button). If I just select the cell and press Session Record, the metronome works as expected.

If anyone's still following this, I noticed it's not just the metronome, because a note played on the first beat doesn't immediately sound either, but it's there on playback. So it's not just the metronome. Wth?

I've been having the same issue for months. Currently running Live 11.3.13 on both MacOS and Windows 11. Problem happens on both installs.

I'm experiencing the same issue.
MacOS, 12.1.5 standard version.

It's odd I was just complaining how I'm trying to record a simple 1-2-3-4 pattern, but somehow it feels like the beats are accelerating and I can't keep up with a simple beat.
But then I noticed the first beat is missing for some reason.

Welp, almost two years later, I had the same problem - on two different computers, both using the latest v11 - and finally figured it out...

It's a bit embarrassing, but I thought I'd close this out in case anyone else experiences this.

I was a millisecond or so early on the first note. (It only happened in MIDI tracks, which should have been a big clue.) If I'm careful and don't push that first click after the count-in, all is fine.

(Btw, I only found this thread because I was searching for a solution. Almost read the whole thing before I realized it was my own thread!)

Live has a « midi note chase » option. It works with arrangement, not sure with session.
