Tips for Fluidly Browsing Your Curated Presets & Devices on Push

Post by oddeo » Thu Aug 03, 2023 8:52 pm

Does anyone have any tips on how best to configure your User Library files and Collections so that when hot swapping on Push you alway return to where you left off?

The main problem I have is that I've configured the UL and Collections in a way that makes 100% sense to me, but if I load a devices from my Collections and then use the hot swap button, Ableton spits me out in the middle of a maze create by someone else (more accurately, it opens up the browser in the core library structure, and not back to Collections or my User Library where left off.)

The idea of Collections seemed so good to me, but in practice, it is a workflow killer for any time I want to preview different devices from my Collections on the Push.

Has anyone figured out a fluid way to configure things so that navigating and hot swapping your curated set of devices and presets is always fluid on Push?

Thanks!
- Neil

Yeah this is really annoying. I've put all my MPE drum racks in the purple collection and I want to go back there, not to the non-MPE soup.

Ive done a lot of preset racks for Push and VST's, they are all free. Its with midi mapping and for browsing Factory presets on Push from VST's
Either join the group on Facebook, where I do updates also free or go to my web site :)

That has nothing to do with the issue they are talking about I’m afraid.

Following up to see if anyone has any tips, links, or general advice on this that hasn't already been shared.

The path I'm thinking of exploring is abandoning Collections, at least as a primary way of navigating, and using the main Ableton Categories as my primary way of navigating.

This would require be to build muscle memory around paths like Effects > Utilities > Audio Effects Racks > ....., but in theory would always pick up where I left off.

I've don't some basic experiments, like renaming favorite/custom presets with a space as the first character of the name so they are at the top.

Any other ideas of how to organize my presets within the confines off Ableton's Categories structure?

Imo Collections is still the best trick atm.
But as you know, there's some caveats.
This just needs to be improved. If you're part of the beta program on Centercode, you can add/upvote a Suggestion regarding this.

I got to use this during my vacation and browsing was the biggest bummer.

Compared to Maschine which has a great browsing experience, Push 3 standalone seems tacked on. In controller mode I think this wasn't a big deal as it is pretty easy to browse for stuff using the mouse and keyboard but for standalone, it is more difficult.

My guess is Ableton 12, browser is going to get refined to make a better Push 3 experience.

I hope this is something they improve in the future as well, browsing and hot swapping samples & loops on Maschine seems much more fluid, whereas in the Push 3 I feel a lot of friction and jumping around to locations which slows down workflow.
