Launchpad X Mk2 CC mapping

Hi! I'm hoping to map a pad, (in a Custom Layout set as a CC), to a native live device.

Desired behavior: Enter Midi map mode, click the "device enable" button on an arpeggiator, now that pad turns that device on & off.
Using Novation Components I have created a "Custom Mode" layout which has four CC pads assigned. They are set to CC numbers 21, 22, 23, 24.
Problem: Midi mapping one of my special pads to a device does not work.

Any help or guidance is appreciated!

In MIDI preferences have you set remote to on for input and output for the controller?

In my defense, There are 2 different rows for the LPX in the Midi preferences...
In: Launchpad_X Input (LPX MIDI)
In: MIDIIN2 (LPX MIDI)
---
In: Launchpad_X Output (LPX MIDI)
In: MIDIOUT2 (LPX MIDI)

I did not have the second ones set to Remote.
...which is because I was going by these [not quite clear] instructions on the Novation site.
