i use live 10 in windows and i'm looking for browser alternatives that have a good integration with my live workflow; i've already looked at a few alternatives (adsr, resonic, one or two others) but i wasn't convinced. do you have any experiences you'd be willing to share, with the aforementioned programs or others?
my particular pain points with the browser are:
- it doesn't resolve symbolic links
- no real access to the hd, just to live's index, and for newly created files it can take a while (hours) for them to be indexed so they're not initially available in the browser sometimes right after you put them in an indexed directory. workarounds like creating a new directory inside the one you want indexed NOW to force live to look at it are unreliable
- the index/search function is so slow, it takes 10 seconds for every action in the browser when i have entered a search term (i don't get what the problem is, the program "Everything" can do indexed search of much larger file sets instantly and without lag, so it's not categorically impossible)
- rudimentary tagging system with just seven categories (only three of which are visible on a file even if more apply)
- only file name plus one extra data column visible - can't see file date and file size at the same time (WHY)
- no way to see metadata (like id3 tags) in the browser
- can't sort by multiple criteria
- can't make a flat list of search results, have to drill down into folders for files that match the search term
- laggy/slow operation
- after clicking somewhere there's no indication that live is working on the thing (for instance, opening a directory) - it just looks like it didn't get the command, and you end up unsure whether you clicked in the right place for the seconds it takes to open a directory
is there anything that alleviates these problems while keeping the good parts of the browser:
- tags immediately visible in the file list
- drag and drop everywhere
- sensible keyboard navigation including play and load keys
... and ideally adds stuff like
- multi-rename
- links to related files
- in-place metadata editing
?
what are your experiences?
