Max 4 Live to Arm Tracks on Clip Selection in session view *when track is not armed*?

Post by haikuluke » Sun Oct 29, 2023 7:38 pm

For reasons, mostly that I perform using my feet to control push 2, since both my hands are needed to play my main instruments, I am hoping to find a way to arm a track when I push a clip slot in session view on push.

What I mean is shown through my current setup: I currently arm all of my tracks and have the monitor set to off. I can then choose any clip slot and do fixed length recording from any. It's fun for improvisation.

This works fine, but when I go to export my recording I have to go through and delete all of the sections where each track is recording everything. In other words, in arrangement view I have lots of layered tracks where they are recording whatever I am playing if said track is stopped. Not a big deal but kind of annoying for my workflow I guess, since I record a LOT.

I do know that I can push and hold the track selector to arm the track, but this isn't a good solution, as it adds friction and extra time to my improvisation which is usually pretty quick paced. I am experimenting with using ClyphX to arm and disarm tracks, but I prefer the flexibility I currently have by having all tracks armed, so that I can improvise as needed.

(for further context, I typically have three tracks armed where I record cello. If it were just one track this could be easy, but I like to do two harmonies and a bass and improvise over top)

Browsing now but haven't found: does anyone know of a max4live or other solution that would allow a track to not be armed, and when I push the greyed out pad on my session view on push it would arm and start fixed length recording?

I do know about and use the "trackarmonselection" in options txt, but sadly that doesn't translate to push 2... (the above mentioned push track button to arm would be ok if I didn't have to hold it for a moment)

Anyways. A long shot but I figured I'd ask!

Thanks so much in advance :)

So basically arm a track when it's selected ?

Thanks for response… I noted that in my (long) question, but it does not correspond the same way using push, unfortunately

Sorry I read a bit too fast.

Here's a patch, quickly done, that should arm a track on selection. Ok, it's still not what you want.

So what you wish is : whenever you press a pad on the Push Matrix, when Push is in Session Mode, it will check if the clip slot is empty, and if so, arm the track, then fire the recording, right ?
Didn't find the time to do it, but I'll do it, I like the idea.

:o
Oh my gosh that would be amazing!
I think others might find it useful too… I know I am in minority that uses push with my toes and improvised but it is a great tool for that. Thank you!!!
