I know it’s an old thread, but since I had the same problem and couldn‘t solve it for quite some time I thought I might post my solution :D
I am using a Moog Subsequent 37; I connected audio and Midi (via USB), but when I started a clip (on my MIDI track with an external instrument on it) the Synth just wouldn‘t play ... but the MIDI light kept flashing. So I knew it received MIDI info, but why wouldn‘t it play?
If you‘re having the same problem check for the „input MIDI channels“ on your hardware Synth - the MIDI in has to match the MIDI channel on your external instrument in Ableton. My Subsequent was set to channel 10, and as soon as I switched to 10 on the external instrument, it started playing. It‘s easy to confuse MIDI channels with audio input channels on your interface ...
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much for posting this. This was the solution I needed. If it hadn't been for you these older posts would have lead me no where. Cheers.

Similar issue as OP and others, but none of these solutions worked for me. I did find a different solution but I think it should be flagged as a software bug. Posting here in case others have the same issue.

My situation: Using Suite 11 and Kontact plug-ins. Made several drum loops on different Midi tracks last night. No issues. Opened the project today and start working on things, but notice quickly one of the tracks is showing "-inf" track volume, no hits whatsoever. I click to session view, try triggering individual clips - no sound still. Check that no solos, or disables are getting in my way. Try using midi inputs - can see the midi triggers, instrument is set to "All Ins" & "All Channels." No clip triggers, no controller triggers able to play the instrument.

Here's where it gets weird. Two other instruments are practically the same Kontact setup, mostly different parameters, and they playback as expected. I opened the Kontact player on the problem midi instrument and clicked on the instruments with my mouse - drum triggers and makes sounds, woohoo. Still nothing from midi controller or the clip, though. I then duplicated the instrument and the duplicate instrument immediately triggered from clips and midi inputs, without any modifications. I then deleted the original instrument and moved on. I have had to do this many times in the past with instruments bugging out.

This is not expected behavior and seems to me like a software bug.
