Live 12 Beta

Post by beeswax123 » Wed Nov 15, 2023 2:19 am

From the release notes:
  • The Load Previous and Load Next actions are now assigned to the lower display buttons instead of the upper display buttons.
  • The Preview button and text now change color depending on whether Preview is active or not.
  • Push 3 supports the newly introduced tuning systems. When a tuning system is loaded in Live, Push’s pads and interface will update to reflect the change:
  • When using no tuning system or a tuning system with twelve notes with identical intervals between adjacent notes (equal temperament), the full Scales menu is available.
  • When using a tuning system with twelve notes with differing intervals between adjacent notes (non-equal temperament), the root note selector is not available in the Scales menu.
  • When using a tuning system that is not built with twelve notes, the Scales menu is displayed in the same way as before for all tuning systems: with one list for configuring the interval between rows in semitones.
  • The Layout control has more options to help suit the different needs of different systems. Adjust this control to change the number of semitones each row is offset from the one below it. For example, if
  • Layout is set to 5st the first pad will be pitch 1, then the pad above it will be pitch 6, and the pad above that will be pitch 11, and so on.
  • In Melodic mode, Push's pads will display the root note of the system in the track color, and all other notes of the system in white.
  • The sequencers update to indicate the correct pitches in the normal levels of white.
  • Note names in Push’s Clip View will be updated to reflect whatever notes are used in a loaded tuning system.
  • When Push 3 is set to MPE Expression Mode and Note Pitch Bend is set to Automatic, pitch bend will be disabled if a tuning system is enabled in Live.
  • New parameter banks for the Live 12 devices Meld, Roar, and CC Control have been added to Push 3 and 2.
  • The Random and Arpeggiator device parameter banks have been updated.
  • The Scale parameter in the Random device has been renamed to Interval to match the updated device UI.
  • Updated parameter banks for the Scale and Chord MIDI effects.
Excited to test these once the beta gets released

Not to be a curmudgeon but what about templates, renaming favorites, clip follow actions and PG changes for Standalone? These are basic things. From what I understand most of the new MIDI clip features aren't available as controls on Push 3 either, at least according to some of the beta testers.

Yeah I’m confused on the last point. I watched the Sonicstate presentation and one of the new MIDI tools seemed to indicate program change on Push 3 but then the Ableton guy’s response when asked was ambiguous.

Perhaps having got Live 12 out the door (who knows when development began) attention will shift to greater parity between Live and Push.

By beta testers do you mean private beta testers of Live 12? Push public beta is still 11.x

Yeah apologies, meant Live 12 beta testers. I asked for comment from one of the early testers and that was the response I got.

This was either presented wrongly, or you mixed things up.
There's nothing new in this area atm.
The new "midi tools" only acts on clips. They either generate and/or transform midi notes. ATM, these tools don't work with other type of midi messages.

So disappointing, feels like Push 3 Standalone owners have been left on the shelf due to lack of available developer investment to keep Push 3 at the bleeding edge of Live's co development.

I really hope Push 3 doesn't become a 'We will get these features at some point' meme.

Some essentials that I am surprised are not within this release are:

- The ability to use a modulation device's destination selector (ie: using LFO to Modulate Analog's Unison amount)
- The ability to map macro's to a grouped device's parameters
- The ability to search for something such as a snare sample or a bass preset by typing in the name (as you would when naming a project)
- The ability to browse user Wavetable's within Wavetable (Similar to how you can load a sample into simpler with the hot swap button)
- The ability to auto search for missing project files on opening (Similar to that of live)

These are some of the basics that would really elevate my user experience.

This really concerns me.
Push3 standalone actual status is really awful. A lot of essential features have not been implemented yet, it is certainly unstable and the performance with medium size projects is bad.
We are basically "beta-testing" the product...
I just bought it and it seems that I have now to pay again more for this upgrade while the actual version running in a 1800 Euros device is not running as expected... Now I have to pay again to unlock features.
A little bit greedy.

That is an interesting point in relation to what would be considered new features for Push 3 Standalone. As Live's iterations continue, what would be considered essential features not yet integrated regardless of which release of Live Suite you own?

I guess anything present in Live prior to the new Live version upgrade should be considered essential?

I am also very disappointed with the Live 12 announcement. The Push 3 Standalone owners have bought an unfinished product with a lot of bugs - which still haven't been fixed.

Instead of Ableton fixing Push 3 before they release a new product, we are forced to pay money again (in the hope that this update will finally fix all the bugs)? Not to mention the many missing (minor!) improvements that make DAW-less work possible...

Thank you Ableton!

Does Ableton have any official comment? How about some assurance that these features will be implemented in the near term?

And on top of all that, the early supporters, still struggling with the bugs and just spending even more money for the adapters, have to find out that there’s a 20% discount for the stand alone right now 🥳 thanks ableton

I supported Ableton for years, and bought my Push 3 Standalone 3 months ago. I even have to pay for the Live 12 update, this is not feeling good Ableton!

I bought the push 3 and live suite by the end of july this year.
Many of the new features feel like a patched version of available functions which you should get by default, if you buy a device and software at this price range.

Honestly I am disappointed.

I forgot to add a few other essentials for standalone :

-Groovepool access and use

-Extracting grooves from audio

-Quantising audio/midi based on these grooves

I wonder if the update output could be somehow directly related to the current processing capabilities and based on internal testing they destabilise the device so are not able to yet be implemented without refinement 🤔

Hopefully not and they are in the works.

It kinda reminds me of iOS when we first got Audiobus and all the possibilities, for about 7+ years there was a consistent ebb and flow of hope and disappointment as the platform developed to what it is today.

Heres hoping for some love and surprises from Ableton🤞
