Preserve Arrangement playback position while editing?

Post by ozone7 » Sun Nov 19, 2023 11:00 am

This is a question from a long term user (Live 2), specific to something that used to be amazing, and now (for me) isn't.

The most frustrating thing about Ableton since V4 is that you can no longer place the Arrangement view playback cursor at, say, half way through a chorus, run transport over the next few bars, selecting and tweaking clips as you go, and the playback cursor stay where you had it.

Because the next playback will now be from the last clip you've selected. Which could be the last beat of the drum fill coming out of the chorus.

You used to be able to quickly dot around the arrangement, using a click in the scrub area to pin a start time for the next section to play through and it would stay there until it was moved - allowing multiple edit adjustments, and then playback from the same point.

The only workaround is to place a Song Starts here marker where you want it. Which is much slower. Song section markers are fine, but are usually "chorus 1" "Vs 2" etc, not "1 bar back from drum fill half way through vs 1", which is where you temporarily want to play back from as you fine tune that fill.

So I'd love to be able to optionally detach the playback start point from edit selection. And a modifier-click in the scrub area to place the playback start would be amazing.

If there's a way of doing this that I've missed in updates, please do fill me in. I've kept up with all Live releases but this functionality (having had it originally) is really missing for the way I work in Arrangement.

Thanks all.
