How to map MPE values to any parameter ?

Post by mattjakob » Sun Nov 26, 2023 8:35 am

Wondering how to do parameters mapping in Push Standalone...

What if I want to map the MPE aftertouch to something like the Res or Sub Osc of my instrument?

I can load an Expression Control to my instrument but there's no 'Mapping' button in the Push interface...

Most Live instrument have internal modulations that let's you do this, no need to map anything from the outside...

How would you control the Resolution of a filter using the touch value from MPE then?

In Drift and Wavetable all the routing is already available.

There is MPE expression effect (M4L I think) which would possibly allow you to assign MPE to instruments but guess it's only use would be in controller mode with VSTs. The plugin needs to already support MPE. Less sure what happens when you use this is non-MPE capable instruments, i.e. is mono pitch sliding still possible? May try this later.

The downside of this is that it doesn't provide polyphonic control since it relies on mapping the destination. It responds to MPE input, but the resulting modulation is mono.

But, as said before, Live instruments have builtin MPE modulation so there's no reason to use something else.

I'm still learning here, I'm at the point where I have 2 paths toward this kind of customization:
1. Figure out if it's possible (eventually?) to simply add an Expression Control device to any instrument rack *on Push* and designate target attributes for each/any MPE measurement - I'm hitting all the threads related to this and noting that you can do it in Live, then transfer the project to Push and it works - but you apparently can't change/create those mappings solely on Push.
2. Get to know Drift - but I already suspect that it is not quite what's hoped for here, in terms of simply strapping a control to any instrument and overriding how the pad expression manipulates that instrument.

If you're using Drift, then use its builtin modulation system.
Once again, Expression Control will only output a monophonic modulation signal since it's "physically" mapped to a knob/slider.
