VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
I am trying to setup a multitimbral Roland VST3 in a Drum Rack. I am doing it the way we have all been doing it for years. Drag the VST on to a Drum Rack pad, set the pad to receive all notes, add External Instrument devices to other pads to route MIDI to the multitimbral instrument.
The issue: The VST3 is not "seen" by the External Instrument device. So, I cannot route the MIDI to it.
This works fine with the VST2 versions. But, for this plugin, Roland did not release a VST2 version.
Is this an Ableton bug with VST3s? Possibly due to the new routing functionality that was recently introduced?
Edit/update: I just submitted a support case for this.

How did you resolve this? I just started tinkering with Roland Cloud and have hit this wall.
Re: VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
I never resolved it, and I am no longer using that Roland plugin. Sorry.

Re: VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
I just looked back through my emails with Ableton support, and at the time we both kind of agreed it was probably an issue on Roland’s end. That is where I left it.

Re: VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
Thanks for getting back to me. I feared there was no resolution.
Re: VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
You're welcome. BTW, I looked back at my emails again, and I had also raised a ticket with Roland. The last communication I got from them was that they had forwarded the repro steps to their development team so they could take a look at it. Sad to hear it is apparently still an issue.

Re: VST3 in Drum Rack cannot receive MIDI
The VST plugin by Blue Cat Audio called "Patchwork" gets round this problem. You would host your Roland plugin in that and it behaves nicely with Live and shows all its MIDI channels. It's about $90 though.
I investigated another VST host plugin, something open source called "Carla". That is a VST2 plugin at the moment and won't host VST3 plugins. It will host VST2 plugins and also shows all its MIDI channels to Live.
I'd be interested to hear from a plugin developer as to why this happens. Some plugins work fine with Live, others only see one merged channel. It doesn't seem to be an issue in other applications, like Reaper.
