Hi
I'm trying to follow this tutorial https://youtu.be/ll72MpJmvuk?t=704, especially the part about midi mapping (posted the exact moment in the link).
When using vital as an instrument, as in tutorial, I'm able to correctly do "Learn midi assignement" for Vital to pick up the CC mapping that is being send by gatelab.
I have no idea how to do the same with ableton native instruments/devices. Say I wanted to control the Operator resonance based on this midi signal. If I click Ctrl+M, it normally awaits for the midi to be picked up (from external device for example), but for some reason it's unable to pick up the signal from a different track (with Gatelab in this case). Vital is picking the signal up if the track is playing, but ableton native devices are not.
I would be grateful for any hints how to fix the issue. I'm using Ableton Live 11.
Thanks
Ableton native devices to receive CC signal
Re: Ableton native devices to receive CC signal
I just found out the following:
Do I understand it correctly that the feature I'm looking for is not supported?
Taken from https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/artic ... CN6SD6VPY2Do Live Instruments and Devices respond to MIDI CC?
Individual controls in Live Instruments (like for example Filter Cutoff and Resonance) don't respond to MIDI CC sent using Track messages. However all Live instruments and devices can be MIDI mapped to a specific MIDI CC if using MIDI remote control.

Re: Ableton native devices to receive CC signal
I'm not sure if this is relevant to what you're trying to do, but there are freeware software standalone apps that can run on the computer such loopMIDI on a PC that you can send a MIDI command out from one of your tracks and it will be returned to Ableton as a remote Ableton command. For example I do this all the time on tracks I'm playing live. When the track ends I have a separate MIDI track that sends a MIDI command to the loopMIDI app which is then echoed back to Ableton as a remote command to stop playing for example. I would assume you could extend the model such that your Native Instrument device is monitoring the same MIDI channel as configured in the loopMIDI.
Re: Ableton native devices to receive CC signal
Most midi cc for live native devices would have to be midi mapped, which is fine from midi input control devices from Preferences. Things selected for ‘Remote’.
As mentioned above, to do this, you’d kind of have to route midi out of Live and then back into Live, which is far from ideal. You might even experience a little extra latency.
There might be some kind of max workaround that could give devices midi cc controls. I think that’d actually be really cool haha. I don’t think it exists but it’d be neat for sure. (Now that I think about it there might be some modulator type devices that accept cc input and output control to any parameter in Live you assign it to)
Lastly, a lot of Live’s devices do respond to some of the most common midi cc options. The big one being the modwheel. That’s set up in various ways from within the device. Of course, for many many presets, the modwheel might already be used to control certain things. But if it is available, you can have modwheel control Resonance for instance, then have your plugin send cc of the modwheel to that device to modulate the resonance.

Thanks for the suggestions, loopMIDI looks promising, will check that out!
