Equivalent to Reason's remotemap variations?

Post by spacepluk » Wed May 22, 2024 7:45 am

Hi everybody,
Does Ableton Live have a feature that is similar to Reason's remote map variations?

Here's how it works for those that don't know Reason. Let's say I have a simple midi controller with no screen and 8 pads/encoders. In Reason's I can make the pads change into groups/pages of predefined parameters (OSC, Filter, Env, etc.) that change what the encoders are controlling. You can create mappings for every device and it makes for a very tactile and muscle-memory-friendly system that I really like.

I was wondering if there's something similar in Ableton, or maybe another way to achieve a similar behavior.
Cheers!

Yes it's a user remote script that you can configure yourself.

hahaha! I thought about that but I was wondering if there's a way that is less work. In Reason you can edit the remotemap files with excel and that's less work than writing a full-fledged custom script.

i would love to create a simple remote script for my novationlaunch control to do precisely that (automap 8 macros of the selected track)
It seemed really easy in Live 9 with text files but everything has changed since then.
Would somebody mind telling me how i could do that now in 12?
thank you!

ooh! I thought you meant a python script!
I think this is exactly what I needed, thank you!

Actually, I don't think this does what I want... unless I'm missing something.

I don't see how to customize which parameters are in each page/bank for each device. Or how to jump directly to a specific page.

Ok, if I understand this correctly the only way to do this is a custom python script. And the default mappings for all the devices are in the _Generic script which I'd have to change/fork if I want something different.

You are venturing into a whole world of hurt!!

I'm assuming your controller doesn't have it's own Control Surface Script so the options out there are:

1, Write your own having learnt python and decompiled the factory scripts
2, Utilise a service like Remotify that does the heavy lifting for you.
3, Use CLyphX Pro and ClyphX Pro Bindings to create your own Dynamic MIDI Mappings.

Hahaha,
It's alright! I almost have it doing what I want now :D

I have a couple of controllers that have basic integration: Kontrol mk3 and Akai MPK mini 3. I'm mostly playing with the AKAI now because that's what I have on the desk. It looks like parameter banks are pretty much equivalent to Reason's remote variants, it's just a lot harder to change them because they are hardcoded in GenericScript but getting there!

Thanks for the other recommendations, I'll take a look at those too!
