Issue With Recording into Ableton

Post by illusive » Sun Dec 31, 2023 5:40 am

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had great holidays. I'm currently having an issue with Ableton where I can't actually record any of my external instruments. The Audio returns glitchy.. and doesn't have every audio band. This problem I found out is just with Ableton. I tried adjusting the buffer size, reinstalling from scratch, and double checking my permissions to use Microphone. I've also ensure that it has full disk access. I'm lost and just want to finish making my project. I'm using a Universal Audio Device(Apollo Twin Thunderbolt version), MacOS Sonoma 14.2.1, on an M1. I'm able to record into Garage Band --- I downloaded a trial version of Fruity Loops and it allows me to Record audio into it flawlessly.

Here's a screenie of the issue. The audio seems to be distributing to every channel and I can't put my fingetip on why that is so. This only Happens with Ableton.

The Recording looks like this

take this with a grain of salt, as I've no familiarity with Apollo interfaces, but I looked up the specs and it says it's got 10 inputs, but your screenshot shows 16...that seems strange to me... have you looked at the I/O settings in the UAD app (assuming it has one), or in Live?

weirdly enough I fixed the issue by booting into safemode on mac. I had to idea about just it cleaning my system cache it verifies your startup disk and usually repairs directory issues. I just figured it was something weird.... Appreciate the comment and hope you have a happy new year.

I'm having the same issue (and also the same exact setup: Running Sonoma on a M1 Mac, UAD Apollo Thunderbolt), and even though I started my Mac on recovery mode and used the Disk Utility's "First Aid" tool, the problem is still there.

Could you elaborate on how you were able to clear your cache and repair the directory issues you mentioned?

Thanks!

Got the exact same issue right here with my UAD Volt... Audio recording in garageband but not into Ableton. Completely reinstalled and reauthorised Live, all Drivers up to date. Botted in Safe Mode, Cleared all my Cache and used First Aid Tool. Nothing helped.

Anything more I can do or do I just gotta factory reset my Laptop? Problem occurred since yesterday... Before it worked fine

I've had a resolution to this problem today thanks to Ableton's tech support.

The same problem. Recording perfectly into GarageBand but low-level/breaking up audio when recording in Ableton.

I did all the things—updated everything, different cables, ports, FirstAid tool, etc

The solution (that worked for me at least) was right in front of my nose. Once I switched the mic mode from isolation, recording started working perfectly on loading Ableton back up. Here's the guidance I got/followed:

It could be that the Mic Mode for the Live application is set to “Voice Isolation”. This would affect Live’s ability to record audio properly.

To adjust this setting for macOS Monterey and Ventura:
Ensure an Audio Input Device is configured in Live's Settings/Preferences (Command+comma).
Open Control Center from the macOS Menu Bar.
Make sure the Mic Mode is set to Standard.

To adjust this setting for macOS Sonoma and above:
Ensure an Audio Input Device is configured in Live's Settings/Preferences (Command+comma).
Click on the microphone icon in the macOS Menu Bar labelled "Mic Mode".
Make sure the Mic Mode is set to Standard.

Was this issue ever solved? I'm having the exact same problem with nearly the same equipment.

I did some testing and it worked fine when accessing Live from another user profile... I just saved my stuff onto a hard drive and migrated to that new User Profile. Worked fine since then. There's no logical reason why it worked, but it did somehow.

OMG thank God for this thread!! I was totally having this exact same issue, then I realised that the other day I switched my mic mode to isolation just to see what that meant. I noticed no difference anywhere and forgot about it. All day today I've been having glitchy recording issues with no idea why, and only in Ableton. Like, what the hell? Then I merely switched that mic setting back to standard and voila.

So the question is.....what the hell does the isolation setting do to F up Ableton?? SO random.

Thanks again for your reply!
