[QUERY] Automating Volume/Envelope Of Each Note In A MIDI Clip

Post by noizfactory » Tue Jul 23, 2024 7:43 am

Hi,

Apologies if this is a basic question but I have not been able to figure this out in a long time despite having looked online at the docs and forums. I can automate aspects of a whole MIDI clip which affects all the notes together. However, how do I change the volume of each note over time within the same MIDI clip? For example, in the below clip for a string inst, each note starts at a certain volume that I want but when I layer the next note on top of the previous one, I want the volume of the previous note to gradually decrease or evolve over time.

So far, I have been typically doing this by splitting each note in different tracks (since in real life they would be individual players in any case) but I was wondering if it was possible to do this within a single clip to speed up the workflow. Would appreciate any inputs on this.

EDIT:

To clarify, the VST I am using for this case does not support MPE so I cannot use the note expression editor to do this. I guess that is the way to do this and if the device does not support it, then I have to split it into individual tracks for each MIDI note?

Ableton 11.3.25
MacOS

Cheers,

You are correct that in order to automate the volume of each individual note they would need to be seperated in individual midi clips or at least have the MIDI notes staggered in a few clips.

There is another approach depending on the VST you are using and that would be to adjust the envelop, typically adjusting the Decay parameter so that the note fades away after the MIIDI note has sent is off message.
