Quadrophonic setup with P3S ?

Post by CostoLulu » Wed Jul 24, 2024 4:49 pm

Hello everyone,

I've had the Push 3 Standalone for a few months (coming from Elektron groveboxes and eurorack, never touched a DAW before and wanted to stay hardware only with the option of editing on Live) and just freaking love it to bits.
It has changed my life as a producer, to me it's the best of both worlds (hardware synths / DAWs).
So lately I've had a dream as I bought the Push for my gong/sound baths/ceremonies.
People are lying down with their eyes closed, listening to the gongs for meditation purposes.
And I wanted to introduce them to a new experience : quadrophonics.
So I ordered 4x Yamaha HS8 active monitors in order to have enough sub frequencies to play some gong recordings, which I'll connect to 4 outputs of the EVO SP8 connected in ADAT to the Push.

I saw that the Surround Panner is available on the P3S, but I can't access the configuration of the device on the P3S itself.
I have found a few vids talking about Surround Panner (and binaural decoders and stuff like that), including a good one from Loopop, but they're always for Live on a computer.
Ableton's docs for the Push aren't adressing that specific topic, and I'm quite new to Live and the Push.
ChatGPT isn't very helpful on the topic, except to help me chose the HS8 for my application (and I don't regret buying them as they sound amazing with plenty of low end, no need for a sub indeed.)

Would anyone have any pointers as to the general procedure, and how to work with quadrophonic sound on the P3S ?
Including :
- Is it possible to use 4 outputs from the SP8 or do I have to use the native outputs of the Push ? (1/2 + 3/4 for the headphones which I renamed HS8 Front & HS8 Rear in Live)
- do I have to use send channels for the quadrophony and set the output of each channel to Send Only or can I still use the main track ?
- do I need to quadruplicate every single track that I want moving in the quadrophonic space as ChatGPT is telling me (that would be very annoying and too cumbersome) or can I just drop the Surround Panner device chain on each track I want spacialised ?
- if I want a track to be playing on the 4 monitors in a static way, can I just drop a Surround Panner on the track and play the sound from the center in a static configuration ?
- do I have to make my setup on Live on the mac then copy the project to the Push or can I do like I did for my external effects routing ?
(I have created an external device chain in Live for the BigSky and the Cosmos that are always connected to the same inputs and outputs on the SP8, that I copied to the Push and that I can simply drop as a device from the browser on the P3S... I'd just create a custom device as an external effect containing the surround panner chain - with LFO and stuff)

Any help would be tremendously appreciated :)

Also, I'd like to control the surround panner using a MIDI joystick that I'll build using an Arduino, would that work and how should I set it up in the Push ?

I understand now that I can access all the Surround Panner settings in Live then copy my project over to Push.
I also learned from FB that it should be possible to create a Max for Live device to access Surround Panner settings directly from the Push, but haven't dabbled in Max yet (still have a LOT to learn about Live/Max.)

Still playing around with Sends and other stuff, trying to figure it out...
Next step is to move the output channels from 1/2/3/4 on the Push to output channels 1 to 4 on the SP8 (if only to use symetric jack cables for the rear monitors as the headphones output on the Push is asymetrical.)

You could just edit Surround Panner itself.
It's not hard to add parameters mapping:
- open the device, unfreeze it
- press N to create a new object and type in live.banks
- then double-click this live.banks object
- it'll pop up a window within which you'll be able to select the parameters you want to expose to Push's banks (unless none of them are set to be exposed, which i doubt but i didn't check)
- freeze the device, save it
- you might need to remove it from the set and load it again for the parameters to appear on Push

Everything went well until I tried double clicking the live.banks object, which did absolutely nothing.
The issue I had is that I wanted to be able to change the outputs, but that property is not available for mapping anyways.
And actually, it's not an issue at all, I can just put the Surround Panner device on a track in Live, change the outputs ports to the SP8, save the device and copy it to the Push. Problem solved right there.
Thank you for your help, I now understand a bit more about Max :D

Now on to understand the intricacies of working with quadrophonic tracks, with the outputs as Return tracks either in stereo or mono, some tracks playing on the 4 speakers at once (with or without Surround Panning), others playing on a single speaker... it's gonna be a beautiful mess
