Live track volume vs Audacity track volume

Post by MonoTeksist » Tue Aug 13, 2024 5:36 pm

So I played this song I'm working on and one of its group tracks (the big percussion one) shows that, after playing the full song, its volume is at +5.56dB.
Thinking this was somewhat weird I rendered the group track and loaded it into Audacity where I figured out its volume was a very low -13.5dB.
The master track volume was also at -13.5dB so I guessed the group track must be very distorted but the master track's settings turned its volume all the way down to -13.5dB.
Not so. When I normalized the track to -5dB in Audacity there was no extreme distortion at all, just some fuzz that I like and like to keep, but definitely zero clipping of any kind.

So are the Live track's peak levels to be ignored because of them being totally inaccurate?
