Safety backup at gigs?

Post by guest » Wed Jul 09, 2003 1:31 pm

Hi,
Just wondering what you guys who perform or tour with a laptop do to protect yourself from worst case scenario type situations like:

your hard drive packing up on you
your system crashing
your gear getting damaged (or stolen)

It would be less than ideal to have to say "sorry folks, just keep dancing by yourselves while Windoze reboots and I run scandisk, won't be a moment". I imagine smoky club environments probably aren't the best for places one's computer either.

Does anyone use, say a backup HD or a second lappy in case your gig goes wrong?

Thanks,
Gabe

Always take a walkman with some premixed tunes
with you. If your harddisk freezes or chrashes, you
can use the walkman, simple, easy and cheap.
Then take your EXTRA external hardisk, connect it
and go on with your gig on the laptop.
Or take a extra harddisk-sequencer with you.
Roland mc505-909/akai mpc2000/ yamaha su700
The yamaha i think is the best hardware sampler
for playing live.
If you can't get your laptop alive again you can
at least finish your gig in a proper way.

I allways carry 2 backup cds with all my tunes, so in case anything happens, I'd be able to switch to DJing easily.
Make sure your laptop is fully insured (And of course, back up everything before every gig/ tour) - So in case it gets stolen, or someone pours redbull vodka all over it (Happened to me), you get your money back.
Bringing a backup lappie with you is something I can't afford. a backup hard drive - I don't think that you have time to reboot during a gig.
Jam - If you got the yamaha sampler or the MPC, you don't need a laptop...

damn, redbull & vodka in your computer, that's gotta piss u off! Thanks for your comments. Walkman sounds like a good idea while you're fixing things up, not much can go wrong there. Jokes? now that could be painful
