Push 3 questions

Post by Machinesworking » Sun Sep 29, 2024 10:53 pm

Some questions I can't really find on the internet, hopefully some answers. :)

Does MPE work with Push3 as a generic controller for other DAWs or hardware?
[I know Driven by Moss software allows Bitwig and Reaper, but I looking at DP and Logic here]

Is Beat Clock working on Standalone? I have a DAW or two that don't do Ableton Link I will want to sync Standalone with.

How reliable has the ADAT connection been? I have an old RME FF800 that I hook to a Babyface FS right now, and it's flawless.

Does the master volume on Push work as a master volume for the audio interface when you're using it in controller mode without Live running? i.e. can I use it like I currently use the Babyface volume knob to control all system audio going to my monitors?

I have a lead on a cheap Push SO and could possibly replace: audio interface, Push 2, Linnstrument etc. etc. but only if it's not entirely limited to Live.

Can’t speak to all of these since I’m a Live user, but I plugged the Push into my iPad running ShowMIDI and it delivered note on/off, channel pressure for aftertouch, pitch bend on the x-axis, and cc 74 for the y-axis — so as long as your source software can map those parameters, you do have MPE-esque capabilities. The buttons and knobs also send cc data.

I’ve been using the Push 3 as a centrepiece with a Focusrite Octopre connected via ADAT (Push sending clock) and i haven’t had any glitches. I’m not exactly a power user, but I have no reason to expect issues.

The volume knob sends note on/off for G#2 on touch, cc 111 on press, and cc 79 (relative) on turn. So it won’t work as an unpaired volume control, although on MacOS the actual system volume control comes BEFORE the Push’s volume so you can raise or lower your monitor volume before it hits the audio interface. No idea if it’s the same on Windows or not.

In general, the user experience of Push without Live is lacking — there are workarounds (which I’m not overly familiar with nowadays, but I used a background app that linked my Push 1 to Reason 7 back in the day, and it worked rather well), but out of the box you don’t have any led or screen feedback whatsoever. Hope this helps!

Thanks, ,most of that is to be expected, i.e. the same as Push 2. It's really too bad about the audio interface part though. One thing, do you have Push 3 selected as audio system out in Mac OS preferences? With the RME driver it literally controlls the volume of the master and headphone outs from Audio/MIDI Setup.
