12.1 Couldn't Find VST-2 Plugins

Post by Karabey » Thu Oct 10, 2024 6:45 pm

Hey there,

After updating to 12.1, VST-2 plugins like FabFilter couldn't be found by Live.

For some reason 12.1 scanned all the file paths for plugins when it was installed AND it took a really long time. Did you close out and go back in and everything was fine?

I had to set my Custom VST2 and VST3 folders again in Preferences. For good measure i restarted Live as well, and thank god Live found them.
To say the least I was very nervous for a while before I tried this 8O

Is this on Mac or Windows? What was your previous Live version? Are all your Fabfilter plugins latest version?

Go to Preferences > Plugins, and do a deep re-scan by holding down ALT(PC)/option(Mac) and click rescan.

Sometimes it also helps to deactivate the Custom Plugin folder setting in Preferences and only enable the System plugin folders. Then perform a rescan.
You should only do this if you are not using custom plugin folders, of course.

Same issue here. I didn't even choose to update. It just did it. I'm getting warnings about file permissions for some plugins. And when I loaded up the project I'm working on half my plugins aren't loading. So I can't work...

the specific error I'm also getting is "vst cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified"

It's not just one manufacturer. It's all VST2. Even my UAD plugins aren't loading.

I'm on a Mac. I'm closed and re-opened. It says it's got 99,000 plugins to scan... I know I don't have that many. No idea what's going on but it's not cool.

>>>>>>>

After finally finishing the scan that really shouldn't have needed to be done I'm able to load my plugins. However... I'm getting a pinwheel quite frequently now when I wasn't yesterday before this update.

Are you sure you haven’t installed a macOS update?

Yep. I'm on an older macbook pro that can't be updated anymore.

I got my plugins back. Just had to let it scan everything again. But I'm getting the pinwheel pretty often.

I've now had to force quit twice because of Ableton locking up. This feels like a beta version. It was stable yesterday.

Make sure that the index processes finish which can take some time…

You can always find previous Live versions in the Ableton download archive, make sure to turn auto-update off

Sounds like you are mixing up the number of scanned plugins (shown bottom left) with the number of audio files analysed for the sound similarity feature (shown in the middle with a Pause button).

As for the missing VST2's, did you try all the suggested options mentioned in this topic?

Is that what that is?
Yes I got my plugins back. I didn't have to do anything special. Just had to let Ableton do it's scanning. No big deal. Now I'm just worried about the pinwheel and the crashing. Maybe it will resolve itself after it "settles" a bit. I'm a bit suspicious of the Polysynth from UAD. So I'm pulling up other projects to test.

After about six years with Ableton where I could count the crashes on one hand, I just get constant crashing since the 12.1 update. Or, rather, not crashing but having to Force Quit on opening because it just stops responding while scanning plugins. This is after doing a full re-scan.

I might re-install 12.0 if this carries on because it's almost un-useable. Mac Pro 2013 with Monterey.
