Live installs in ProgramData by default, but I would prefer to have it inside Program Files like all other software.
I read in some old posts that it installs in ProgramData to make automatic updates work better (though other programs, like Firefox, work just fine that way, even without the background service--you just get a UAC prompt then).
But in case I don't need automatic updates, could there be any other issues with installing it in Program Files?

Seriously? No replies to this post?
I think the answer should be "it's just the installation path, it's a non-issue", but I'm not sure.
Soory dude. Seems like we both went searching for an answer, but in the end, all that we'd find was each other.

FWIW, since then I've been installing into Program Files without any problems.
And if you're doing it for security reasons, you should change the security settings/properties of the Ableton folder, because by default the files inside have write permissions for all users. It's possible that this can interfere with automatic updates, but if you're installing Live manually it's fine.

Re: Installing in "Program Files" instead of "ProgramData"
I have Ableton installed in the \ProgramData folder and Automatic Updates have never worked.
I get a notification in the info bar, click update, get a message 'You'll be informed when the update is ready....'
I then never get any message to say the update is ready (I left the machine on overnight to see). I restart Live and I get the same 'update is available' message in the info bar - and round the loop we go, but no updates succeed.
I have checked I have full permission on the _autoupdates folder.
The only way that works is to download the update installer and manually update.
So... I think I'll move Ableton to the \Program Files folder, as there is no benefit to having it in the insecure \ProgramData folder
Unless anyone knows different?
Thanks

Re: Installing in "Program Files" instead of "ProgramData"
Program Files is more restricted and you and the program need more permissions to access files and folders, so that would cause new problems. It would certainly not solve the auto-update problem you have.
Auto-update not working:
Close Live (both release and beta) and go to the folder C:\ProgramData\Ableton (read this https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/artic ... en-folders if you can't see this folder) and see if there's a folder ending in '_updated' and/or '.old'. If this is the case, remove these folders.
Make sure no folder or file in the C:\ProgramData\Ableton is in use by any other program (including Explorer) or hanging Live process (which you can see in the Task Manager). It's best to restart the computer to kill any hanging processes.
Start Live and keep an eye on the update message in the status bar of Live. Does it give a notification within a minute that there is an update? If so, don't close Live before you see the message that Live will update after the program is exited. After closing Live wait a couple of minutes for Live to update in the background. If you start Live to soon the update will fail and you are left with an _updated' folder.

Thanks for responding and sorry I missed your reply.
I don't have any _updated or .old folders.
I'll see what happens next update.
