Is Ableton Move's Audio In port balanced

Post by BoddAH » Mon Oct 21, 2024 2:43 pm

I know Move's Audio in port is line-level stereo which is great for sampling music, video, etc. I intend to use it to sample my Arturia MicroFreak synthesizer which incidentally has a mono line-level Output that is also balanced.

In order to maximize signal quality I was wondering if the stereo line-level Audio In port on Move would be balanced as well in case it receives a mono signal. I didn't find this information anywhere.

I don't believe it is balanced. In fact whilst having the Move connected to my Macbook Air via USB and then connecting the Macbook's headphone out to the Move's input I get a horrible ground loop. Solved it with a Palmer Line Isolating box which is a bit bulky so I intend to pick up one of these small inline isolators with 3.5mm jacks either side. I had to lift the ground on the Palmer box so I'm not positive any old line isolator will actually solve it.

I say it was a ground loop but I'm not positive that's strictly true as I'm in the process of learning about grounding/earth/cable shields etc. It persisted whether the Macbook was connected to power outlet or not. Bear in mind I'm using a UK Apple power supply that doesn't use a 3 prong connector.

I get the same issue with noise, I’m pretty sure it’s coming from the dirty supply on my USB-C hub as that’s where the powers coming from. It’s not a ground loop hum, it’s loads of noise.

Funny you should say that as I wondered whether a decent wall powered USB hub might circumvent it. I'd like a combined PD / all in one hub n had imagined someone like Anker might be up to the task. I've had good experiences with hi-speed hubs of theirs in the past.

From what I can remember about the tests in this area, it's quite likely that this is the problem.
