Push 2 User Mode - mappings and momentary status

Post by florian_bl » Sun Oct 27, 2024 10:02 am

Hi,

I'm struggling with a tricky question in an otherwise perfectly working setup and haven't been able to solve this in the previous months. Maybe some of you have an idea how this can be achieved.

The initial situation:

Push 2 is in User Mode. I have several things from different places in Ableton Live mapped to pads and knobs.
  • Pad row 1: Scenes 1 - 8
  • Pad rows 2 - 8: Individual clips in Toggle or Trigger Mode from all over the Live Project
  • Knobs 1 - 8: Individual parameters from all over the Live Project

The problem with it:

Push 2 gives me no visual feedback if a pad has been mapped to a clip or if the clip is currently playing. Also no feedback about the mapped status of a knob.

Solutions I have tried:
  • chatGPT
  • Ableton Live Forum
  • Basic things in M4L
I understand that the LEDs of the pads of Push 2 can be controlled via Note On messages and the velocity determines the color. But reading out the status of the whole Push 2 in User Mode and constantly sending this info to the LEDs is far beyond my capabilities in M4L.

My questions:
  • Is there a simple solution that I can download or buy to make Push 2 in User Mode show me what is actually going on?
  • Can I easily build something myself to achieve the desired behavior?
  • Can the display show me the name of the mapped parameter and maybe also its value, as it would happen in Standard (Non-User) Mode?
Any input is welcome. I have created a nice setup to control Ableton Live like a conductor and freely control the intensity of different musical elements while recording it live but this requires User Mode and I can't remember all the mappings or which one of the clips is currently playing without any visual help from the device.

Thank you for your input!

Cheers,
Florian

If you’re just using the pads as on off switches/ momentary buttons it’s not hard to set that part up. Custom colors and layouts are pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. The display would be trickier, there’s a max external that works with it using jitter matrix’s but I don’t have any experience with them. It’s made by sigabort if you wanna check them out. You may have better luck making a M4L device that takes over the Push and uses objects that natively show on the display? Depending on what information you wanted on the display it may be doable that way? There may already be a similar device to what you’re wanting also, have you checked isotonikstudios stuff or there was a device called either push mapper or push hacker someone made a few years ago but I can’t remember who made it?

I highly recommend this device, too. It probably fulfills your requirements and integrates well into the workflow

Thanks a lot gross9978 and jeblo05! Push Hacker 2 looks like the perfect solution for my problem. Unfortunately it isn't sold anymore and seems to not work with Ableton Live 12. I'll ask the developers if they plan to release an updated version soon.
