i have ableton 12 suite, there's a bundled version of max in it. i want to upgrade to max 9 which i know i can do as a separate download and then pick the max path in settings, but the download page says i can only run it as a demo for 30 days.
Do i have to pay for max 9 as an unbundled option even if i've got ableton suite v12??

You don't need to have a Max9 license to use it as your M4L runtime.
Once the 30 days trial period has expired you won't be able to use Max standalone, but it'll keep on working as your M4L editor.
