How to adjust the beginning of the loop in Push 2

Post by weremia » Sat Nov 16, 2024 10:11 pm

Hello everybody,

I have been trying to figure out how to adjust the beginning of a clip in Push 2. After I have recorded a midi clip, let's say drums, I can adjust the end of the clip by moving Loop Length knob. When I move it, I can see on the computer screen, the end of the loop is moving and I can adjust it. But I cannot do the same with the beginning of the clip. When I move Loop position knob, strange things are happening but not very helpful. The beginning of my loop is not adjusting. This is extremely frustrating and I don't know how to do it. All available videos are oblivious to that and it looks like I am the only one having this problem. It has to be possible, right? Please tell me it is....

Kind Regards and all the best with your music

Make sure the clip's start point is correctly set, not only the loop start one.

Hello, thank you for your reply. Yes, it is set just the same as the beginning of the loop. Let's say I recorded 8 bar loop with a drum rack. I am in the clip view in push 2. I can see my clip. If I move knob marked "Loop Length" I can adjust the end of the loop. If I move it, I can see on the screen of my computer the loop is moving the same way. But I cannot move the beginning of the loop. Can you tell me how to do it? It is driving me nuts.

Thank You and have a lovely ableton time.

Hello Weremia,

You mention "strange things are happening".

By beginning of your loop not adjusting, do you mean it looks like this on the computer screen (after moving Loop Position on Push 2 onto 1.4.1)?

Image

On the left side of the Ableton Live computer screenshot, 1.4.1 Position correlates with the right side Loop Brace at 1.4.1, along with my Push 2 "Loop Position" with a value 1.4.1.

Photo of Push 2:

And the Start 3.1.1 on the left side screenshot correlates with little arrow marker at 3.1.1 on the right side. On the Push 2, this correlates with the "Start Offset" value.

SO!

Just working from the Push 2, use the Shift button if necessary to fine tune the knob motions, but depending on workflow, you might want to do something like this:

Set the Loop Position where you want to hear things for your 8 bar loop. For example, some intro space and outro notes are clipped out.
This confused me once: You probably want to set the Start Offset to the same point in the measure as the Loop Position.

Then on the Push 2 you could press the clip "Crop" button beside the "Loop" activator button.
This is what it looks like before Crop (note the numbers, and the location of the blue arrow and line now at the beginning instead of 3.1.1 as it is above):

And afterward, this:

Finally, this is the cropped clip on the screen. In my example, it's exactly 2 loops now, with no leading or trailing space:

Does this work for you and help make sense of what you're seeing when you move the knobs?

Also, if you swing the Loop Position knob a little bit fast, it definitely goes far negative or positive from where you likely want to be.

One reasoning behind this possibility is that Live lets you have the choice of starting a clip (with the Offset when placed before Loop Position), then initiating the loop once the clip gets to that point.

To give a clear example:

You have a 32 bar section of notes, and wish to loop the last 16 bars. AFTER cropping your 32 bars, Start Offset would always be 1.1.1
Then you could set your Loop Length to 16.0.0, and finally the Loop Position could roll to 16.1.1.

If you launched that clip when its Loop switch was on, the first 16 bars would play once and the last 16 would play indefinitely.
